Regarding hells, it is said in the scriptures that they are located on the surface of the earth, and it is also said in the scriptures that they are near the ocean, as it is said in the "Tale of the Well-Guarded." Thus, the cause of being born in those places, as will be explained below, is very easy to occur, so many are accumulated every day. Even if much has been accumulated before, there are still countless, so one should not stay at ease, but should think about these and be afraid. Because between those (hells) and us, there is nothing but this faint breath. As it is said in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Having done the deeds of hell, why do you still live in comfort?" And as it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "The interval between the breath of a sinner is the suffering of hell. Having heard of the immeasurable suffering, why are you not afraid, but are of the nature of vajra? Seeing, hearing, remembering, writing, and creating images of hells still cause fear. What need is there to say of those who experience the unbearable results of suffering?" And so on. Regarding intense suffering, it is also said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Just as among all pleasures, the exhaustion of craving is the most excellent pleasure, so among all sufferings, the suffering of the Avici hell is unbearable. The suffering of being stabbed violently by three hundred short spears in one day here is not even a small part of the suffering of hell, let alone enduring it completely." And so on. It should be understood that the cause of producing such suffering is only one's own misdeeds. One should make every effort to avoid being tainted by even the smallest misdeed. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "The seeds of these non-virtuous results are the evil deeds of body, speech, and mind. You should make every effort to ensure that not even a speck of dust can reach them." And so on. Secondly, regarding animals, the strong kill the weak, and they become tools for gods and humans. Because they have no autonomy and are controlled by others, they are killed, beaten, and harmed. Because they move with gods and humans, they have no other dwelling place, and the scriptures say that they are located on the surface of the earth. The commentary on the treatises says that the root of those places is the great ocean, and the others are extensions from there. Furthermore, they are born in darkness and water, and grow old there.

The exhaustion from death and heavy burdens, as well as plowing, shearing, herding, etc., and being tormented and killed by various different methods of slaughter, and being tormented by hunger, thirst, and sun and wind, and being harmed in many ways by hunters, etc. Therefore, one should always think about the various terrors and sufferings they endure, thereby feeling disgusted and disheartened. Regarding lifespan, the Treasury of Knowledge says: "Animals, the longest is a kalpa." This means that the lifespan can be as long as a kalpa, and the shortest is uncertain. The third is: those who are overly attached to miserliness will be reborn as pretas (hungry ghosts). These pretas also suffer from hunger and thirst, their skin and flesh are dried up, like burnt tree stumps, their faces are covered with hair, their mouths are extremely dry, and they lick with their tongues. This is further divided into three: food and drink have external obstacles, food and drink have internal obstacles, and food and drink themselves have obstacles. The first is: when they wander in springs, lakes, and ponds, there are beings holding swords, spears, and short spears who block them, and the water also appears as pus and blood, making them unwilling to drink. The second is: their mouths are only as big as the eye of a needle, flames burn in their mouths, they have tumors, and their bellies are large. Even if no one else hinders them, and they manage to find food and drink, they cannot consume it. The third is: those called "Flame Garland" pretas, everything they eat and drink burns into flames. Those called "Filth Eaters" eat and drink feces and urine, and only consume things that are unclean, foul-smelling, harmful, and deserving of condemnation. Some pretas cut off their own flesh to eat, and cannot enjoy clean and good food and drink. Regarding their dwelling place: it is located five hundred yojanas below the city of the king (Rajagriha) in Jambudvipa (the southern continent). Others are scattered in various places, as stated in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge. Regarding lifespan, according to the Basis of the Earth and the Treasury of Knowledge: taking one month of humans as one day for pretas, they can live for five hundred years. In the Letter to a Friend it says: "Beings who continuously endure suffering, bound tightly by the ropes of evil deeds, some will not die for five thousand or even ten thousand years." That is, the lifespan of some pretas is five thousand years, and that of others is ten thousand years, as stated in the commentary.
