Oṃ. Firstly, it says in the Compendium: "Through discipline, one obtains the nature of many animal existences, and by abandoning the eight unfree states, one always finds leisure." As it is said, being free from the eight unfree states is leisure. The eight unfree states are: remote border regions where the four assemblies do not travel; those who are foolish and mute, and whose senses are incomplete, lacking limbs, ears, etc.; those with wrong views who hold that there are no past and future lives, no karma and its results, and no Three Jewels; and the absence of the Buddha's teachings in places where Buddhas do not appear. These four are the unfree states of humans. The three lower realms and long-lived gods are the unfree states of non-humans. The long-lived gods are explained in the commentary on the Letter to a Friend as referring to the unconscious beings and the formless beings. The former exist in one direction of the fourth dhyana realm, where the fruits are great, in a manner similar to monasteries in villages, while the latter are ordinary beings born in the formless realms. In the discussion of the eight unfree states, the desire gods who are constantly distracted by the objects of desire are referred to as long-lived gods. The second aspect is divided into two: the five personal endowments are: human birth, born in the central lands, complete senses, not having committed heinous karma, and having faith in the Dharma. Being born in the central lands means being born in a place where the four assemblies travel. Complete senses means not being foolish or mute, and having complete limbs, hands, feet, eyes, ears, etc. Not having committed heinous karma means not having committed or caused others to commit the five heinous crimes. Having faith in the Dharma means having faith in the Vinaya, the place where all white dharmas of the world and beyond arise. Here, Vinaya refers to all three baskets of the Tripitaka. These five are included in one's own mind-stream and are conducive conditions for practicing Dharma, therefore they are called personal endowments. The five external endowments are: the appearance of a Buddha and the teaching of the true Dharma, the continuation of the teachings and following them, and having loving-kindness in one's heart for others. The appearance or arising of a Buddha means attaining complete enlightenment after accumulating merit for three countless eons. Teaching the true Dharma means the Buddha or his disciples teaching the Dharma. The continuation of the teachings means that from the time the Buddha attained enlightenment and taught the Dharma until he passed into nirvana, the Dharma of practice, which is the way to realize the ultimate truth, does not decline. Following the teachings that continue means that by realizing the Dharma, one is born

Knowing that they have the power to personally practice the sacred Dharma, one should follow the teachings as they understand them. Others show compassion by donors and patrons giving robes and so on. These five exist in the continuum of others and are conditions for practicing the Dharma, so they are the help of others. Secondly, if one does not practice pure Dharma for the sake of ultimate happiness, but only strives for happiness before death and the elimination of suffering, then even animals have this. Even if one is born in a good rebirth, it is the same as an animal. To practice the Mahayana path, one needs such a basis as mentioned before. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "Having become the basis of the Sugata's path, prepared to lead beings, whatever is obtained by a person of great mental strength, that path is not obtained by gods and nagas, nor by asuras, nor by khading rigdzin mi'am chi, nor by abdominal creepers." Furthermore, some desire gods who previously had thick imprints of practicing the path on the human basis may initially be suitable as a basis for seeing the truth, but it is impossible to attain the noble path for the first time on a higher basis. Moreover, most of the desire gods are said to be in a place of no leisure, as mentioned before, so humans are the best basis for practicing the path for the first time. Also, people with unpleasant voices are not suitable as a basis for taking vows, so the basis of the three continents is praised, and among them, the people of Jambudvipa (Earth) are praised. Therefore, having obtained such a good basis, why should I make it fruitless? If I make it meaningless, then it is deceiving myself, and what could be greater foolishness than this? Having passed through many dangers of places of no leisure, such as the lower realms, and having been liberated only once with great difficulty, if I let it be meaningless and go back to those places, then like being deluded by a mantra, I have become mindless. One should meditate repeatedly through such means. As it says in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Having obtained such leisure, if I do not practice virtue, there is no other deception than this, and there is no other foolishness than this." And "Having obtained a place of great benefit that is very difficult to find, if I knowingly lead myself back to hell, it is like being deluded by a mantra."
