And what do I engage in? It is to act after knowing what should and should not be done. The measure of food is to abandon eating too much or too little, and to eat only the amount that does not harm virtuous actions. Moreover, one should contemplate the faults of craving for food, and eat with the thought that it is not afflicted, benefits the benefactor, that the worms in the body are now gathered with material things and will be gathered with the Dharma in the future, and with the thought of accomplishing the benefit of all sentient beings. One should also remember what is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Food, like medicine, should be taken with reason, without attachment or aversion, not for the sake of fatness, not for the sake of pride, not for the sake of beauty, but only for the sake of maintaining the body." It is said. How should one strive in yoga without sleeping, and what should one do when sleeping? In the Letter to a Friend it says: "O possessor of reason, having spent the entire day, and also after the first and last watches of the night, when you sleep, do not let it become fruitless, but sleep with mindfulness in between." It says, so it shows how to spend the entire day and the first and last parts of the night, in the watches and between the watches. Walking and sitting, make it meaningful by completely subduing the mind to the five obscurations. The conduct of sleeping is between watches, so it should not be spent meaninglessly. Among them, the bodily conduct is, dividing the night into three parts, in the middle part, lie down like a lion, placing the left leg on the right leg with the right side down. Mindfulness is to cultivate following the virtuous actions that one is most accustomed to during the day, until one falls asleep. In this way, even when falling asleep, one can cultivate virtuous practices such as samadhi as if one were not asleep. Awareness is, when cultivating mindfulness, if any affliction arises, one should know it, not accept it, and abandon it. The intention to arise is to generate the thought that one should arise at this time. Thus, apart from the uncommon methods of cultivation during the main practice, how to do the preliminary, main practice, conclusion, and between watches, from here onwards, all objects of meditation up to vipassana should be combined. The second is, མ

In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "Here, first, through reliance on hearing, proper attention arises. From proper attention, the wisdom of the true object of reality also arises." This means that from the meaning of hearing, through the wisdom arising from thought, proper attention is made, and from that, the wisdom arising from meditation, which directly realizes the true meaning, arises. In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it also says: "The limbs of ascertainment and the path of seeing, and the very path of meditation, repeatedly thinking and measuring, and the path of definite ascertainment of meditation." This means that as the path of meditation of the great vehicle noble ones, there is repeated thinking, measuring, and definite ascertainment. In the Compendium of Trainings, it also says: "Therefore, the body, enjoyments, and merit should be given, protected, purified, and increased without interruption, and practiced accordingly." This means that for each of the three, body, enjoyments, and roots of virtue, all four, giving, protecting, purifying, and increasing, should be practiced. For the meditation mentioned above, there are two types: analytical meditation, which cultivates by examining with discriminating wisdom, and stabilizing meditation, which single-pointedly abides without examination. So, what kind of path is analytical meditation, and what kind of path is stabilizing meditation? Like meditating on faith in the spiritual friend, the precious human rebirth being meaningful and difficult to find, death being impermanent, the law of karma, the faults of samsara, and meditating on the mind of enlightenment, analytical meditation is necessary. Like this, for these, strong and long-lasting mental strength and the ability to convince the mind are needed. If not, it will not be possible to prevent the opposite of these, such as disrespect. And generating such mental strength depends entirely on repeatedly examining and meditating with discriminating thought. For example, if one fabricates beautiful characteristics for an object of attachment and meditates on it often, strong attachment will arise. If one thinks of unpleasant characteristics of an enemy often, strong hatred will arise. Therefore, when meditating on these paths, there seems to be no difference whether the appearance of the object is clear or unclear, but because the mind's grasping power needs to be strong and long-lasting, analytical meditation should be done. When the mind cannot abide on one object, and when taming it so that it can be placed on one object as desired, during the practice of calm abiding and so on, one should...
