Furthermore, in terms of relaxation, if one merely stays at the level of thinking, "This might easily lead to dullness," one should adopt a way of settling that is even higher than that level. The noble Asanga also said, "For settling and properly settling, there is the mental engagement of applying effort." This was said in the context of the first two minds. In the first stage of the Stages of Meditation, it is also said, "Eliminate dullness and firmly grasp that object of focus itself." This is how it is explained. If one cultivates mindfulness without understanding the proper way to rely on it, the more one meditates, the greater the forgetfulness, and the duller the wisdom of discriminating the Dharma becomes, and so on, many faults will arise. So, when mindfulness binds the mind to the object of focus, is it permissible to generate the thought of checking whether the object of focus is being well grasped or not? This is said to be necessary in the intermediate Stages of Meditation. That is, it is not that one abandons samadhi to look in that way, but while remaining in the state of samadhi, one merely checks whether the root object of focus remains as it was previously placed, and if it does not remain, one checks whether it has gone into dullness or excitement. While remaining in samadhi, one checks intermittently, not too short and not too long. Doing this before the force of the previous mind is exhausted will cause that mind to generate strength, so that it can remain in a state of strength for a long time, and it is necessary to quickly recognize dullness and excitement. Similarly, cultivating by remembering the previous object of focus from time to time is also necessary to strengthen mindfulness and to be a cause for continuous abiding, so the way to cultivate mindfulness is explained in the Hearer's Ground. In the Explanation of the Middle and Extremes, it says, "Mindfulness is not forgetting the object of focus." What is said is "to verbally state the method of abiding with the mind," that is, relying on mindfulness is to prevent distraction from the object of focus and forgetting the object of focus. Not forgetting the object of focus is to verbally state the object of focus with the mind, that is, to repeatedly remember the object of focus. For example, if one is worried about forgetting some knowledge, one repeatedly recalls it, and it becomes difficult to forget. Third, then, when mindfulness binds the mind to the object of focus, is there a fixed time limit for saying, "Stop at this point"? Regarding this, in the large treatises such as the Hearer's Ground, it does not seem that a time limit is clearly defined.

In the final part of "Stages of Meditation," it says, "With such a sequence, one should remain for an hour, or half a mel-tse, or one tun, or as long as one is able." Although this seems to be a statement about the duration of a tun when practicing vipassanā after śamatha has been accomplished, it also applies similarly when initially practicing śamatha. That is, as previously explained, in the process of cultivating mindfulness and awareness, if one intermittently remembers the object and intermittently remains vigilant, then even if the tun is slightly longer, there is no problem. However, for most beginners, if the tun is too long, either forgetfulness arises and one becomes distracted, and at that time, whether dullness or agitation arises, one only recognizes it after a long time, and cannot quickly identify it. Even if mindfulness is not forgotten, one is easily influenced by dullness and agitation, and one cannot quickly recognize the arising of dullness and agitation. The former of these two obstructs the powerful arising of mindfulness, and the latter obstructs the powerful arising of awareness, so it is difficult to cut off dullness and agitation. In particular, forgetting the object and becoming distracted, and not recognizing the arising of dullness and agitation, is much worse than not quickly recognizing the arising of dullness and agitation while not forgetting the object. Therefore, in order to prevent the loss of mindfulness due to distraction, the method of cultivating mindfulness as previously explained is very important. If the forgetfulness arising from distraction is severe, and the power of awareness is insufficient to quickly recognize dullness and agitation, then a shorter tun is necessary. If it is difficult for forgetfulness to arise, and it seems that one can quickly perceive dullness and agitation, then even if the tun is slightly longer, there is no problem. Considering this, the duration of one hour, etc., is not specified, and in short, one must adjust according to one's own mental capacity, so it is said, "as long as one is able." Furthermore, if there is no sudden harm to body and mind, one should remain in equilibrium. If harm occurs, one should not force oneself to meditate, but should eliminate the obstacles of the elements and then meditate, which is the view of the wise. Therefore, doing so should also be understood as a component of the duration of the tun. The third part is divided into two points: what to do when dullness and agitation arise, and what to do when one is free from dullness and agitation. The first point is divided into two points: relying on the antidote to not recognizing dullness and agitation, and relying on the antidote to not striving to abandon it even when one recognizes it. The first point is divided into two points: determining the characteristics of dullness and agitation.
