It is very clear if you look at the ground. Considering this, it is also said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "When mindfulness, from the gate of the mind, becomes the state of guarding, then vigilance will arise." And in the commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga, it is said: "Mindfulness is said to be the cause of vigilance." One cause is that the mind focuses on the appearance of grasping a deity's form, etc., or focuses on the grasping appearance of experiencing awareness, clarity, etc. As previously explained, by relying on mindfulness, one observes whether the mind wanders to other places, and thus holds the mind. This is considered the key to cultivating vigilance. As it is also said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "The state of body and mind should be examined again and again. In short, that alone is the characteristic of guarding vigilance." As it is said. Therefore, this cultivates the vigilance of awareness from the preparation for the arising of sinking and excitement. By the way of relying on mindfulness, it prevents forgetfulness that arises from distraction, so it is necessary to distinguish the object well. Second, as previously explained, by cultivating mindfulness and vigilance well, mindfulness becomes strong, and even subtle sinking and excitement can be recognized by vigilance. Even though there is no fault of not recognizing the arising of sinking and excitement, if one does not make the effort to prevent them as soon as they arise, but accepts non-action or non-effort, this is a great fault of samādhi. Therefore, as an antidote to it, one should meditate on the mind called "attention" or "effort." There are two aspects to this: recognizing attention and how to prevent sinking and excitement, and recognizing the cause of the arising of sinking and excitement based on what. The first is: In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it says: "What is attention? The manifestation of mental activity is the function of the mind, which is the function of causing the mind to engage in virtuous, non-virtuous, and indeterminate things." The meaning of this is like the power of a magnet causing iron to move involuntarily, the mental factor that causes the mind to engage in and drive any of the three: virtuous, non-virtuous, and indeterminate, is attention. Therefore, here, when sinking or excitement arises, the mind that manifests attention to abandon it is taken. So, how does one prevent sinking and excitement? Sinking of the mind is when it is contracted too much inward, losing the way of holding the object. Therefore, for that

The cause of the mind wandering outwards is to keep pleasant things in mind. That is like the body of the Buddha, not the joy that arises from afflictions. Or, keep the appearance of light, such as sunlight, in mind, and when dullness is cleared, immediately hold tightly to the object of focus and guard it. This is said in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation. Do not meditate on objects that cause sadness, because sadness is the cause of the mind contracting inwards. By examining with discriminating wisdom the object that one wishes to analyze and elaborating on it, dullness can also be reversed. As it says in the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom: "By the power of the strength of diligent insight, if one becomes discouraged, one should also praise (oneself)." Thus, dullness or discouragement is dullness caused by the object of focus losing its grip, and discouragement caused by being too contracted inwards. Therefore, by increasing the grip and expanding the object of focus, they can be reversed. As it says in the Essence of the Middle Way: "When discouraged, one should meditate on a vast object of focus, making it expansive." And: "When discouraged, one should also praise (oneself) by seeing the benefits of diligence." The most important antidote to prevent dullness is to think about the benefits of the Three Jewels and the mind of enlightenment, and the qualities of having obtained leisure and being meaningful, etc., just as pouring cold water on the face of a sleepy person can make the mind clear. This depends on the experience gained from analytical meditation that individually examines the aspects of benefit. For the cause of dullness arising, which is lethargy and sleep, and the dark state of mind that draws the two, even if one relies on the antidote of meditating on the appearance of light, the dullness that depends on them will not arise, and what has arisen will be reversed. For this, one can walk, keep the appearance of light in mind and repeatedly become accustomed to it, and elevate the mind with any of the six recollections of the Three Jewels, ethics, generosity, and deities, or other pleasing objects of focus, recite scriptures that reveal the faults of lethargy and sleep, and look at the directions, the moon, and the stars, wash the face with clean water, etc., as it is said in the Listening Guide. If the dullness is very slight and only occurs once, then tighten the grip of the mind and
