method. The method of generating awareness to understand them during meditation. First, regarding agitation: As it says in the Compendium of Topics, "What is agitation? It is the part of attachment that follows attractive signs, the mind is not pacified, and it has the function of cutting off calm abiding." As it is said. This has three aspects: The object is a pleasing and lovely object. The aspect is that the mind is not pacified and is scattered outwards, it is a part of attachment, and it engages in the manner of craving for objects. The function is to obstruct the mind from abiding on the object. When the mind is placed on an internal object, due to the agitation of attachment to forms, sounds, etc., the mind is involuntarily drawn to those objects and becomes distracted. As it says in the Confession Praise: "However much one focuses on calm abiding, and again and again places the mind on it, from that, the noose of afflictions is involuntarily drawn by the rope of attachment to objects." As it is said. Regarding sinking: In many translations, it is also translated as dejection. Some people think that the dullness of mind that does not scatter to other objects, but abides and is without clarity, is sinking, which is unreasonable. Because the Middle Stages of Meditation and the Commentary on the Middle Way say that sinking arises from dullness. Although the Compendium of Topics also says that sinking is a near affliction of distraction, the distraction mentioned there can also produce good, so it is not necessarily an affliction. Therefore, dullness is: As it says in the Compendium of Topics and the Commentary on the Treasury, it is a part of ignorance, the body and mind are heavy and unfit for work. Sinking is: The way the mind holds the object is loose, and it does not hold the object clearly or firmly, so although there is a clear aspect, if the way of holding the object is not clear, one will fall into sinking. As it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "When the mind does not clearly see the object, like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, then one should know that one has fallen into sinking." As it is said. I have not seen the definition of sinking clearly explained in other major texts. Sinking has two types, virtuous and neutral, while dullness is non-virtuous and obscured, or neutral, and is only a part of ignorance.

Thus, contemplating pleasant realms and appearances, it is said that one must uplift the mind's strength. Blocking the obscurity of the realm as if the mind has fallen into darkness and the decline of the mind's grasping power, both the clarity of the object and the tightness of the grasping are necessary. Agitation is easy to recognize, but because dullness is not clearly recognized from reliable great treatises, it is difficult to know and extremely important, because it is easy to mistake this for flawless samadhi. Therefore, one should carefully examine and recognize it with a meticulous mind, based on experience, as stated in the Stages of Meditation. Secondly, it is not enough to merely have an understanding of dullness and agitation. During meditation, one must be able to generate mindfulness that knows exactly whether dullness and agitation have arisen or not. Moreover, by gradually generating powerful mindfulness, what need is there to say that one can generate mindfulness that recognizes dullness and agitation immediately upon their arising? One must generate awareness of mindfulness from the moment when it has not actually arisen but is only preparing to arise. As it is said in the latter two of the Stages of Meditation: 'If you see that the mind is dull or suspect that it will become dull,' and 'If you see that the mind is agitated or suspect that it will become agitated.'
