Relying on the mindfulness that arises from the power of wisdom. The second is: There are such wrong conceptions to be eliminated: As previously stated, if awareness is elevated and focused, kept without distraction, although there is no sinking, the agitation is greater, so it is seen that it is impossible to maintain a continuous state of focus, and the strength of awareness also diminishes. If the focus is relaxed too much, it is seen that the state of focus arises quickly, and it is thought that this is a good method. However, many say, "Relaxation is the best meditation." This is because they do not distinguish between the arising of sinking and the arising of meditation. Therefore, a flawless samadhi must have the two characteristics mentioned earlier, and the state of non-distraction of mind alone is not sufficient. If, in such a case, there is a confused dullness in the mind, although it is sinking, if there is no dullness and there is a clear appearance of clarity in the mind, and it is thought that this is a flawless samadhi, it is because dullness and sinking have not been distinguished, and these will be explained below. Therefore, if awareness is made too intense by being overly focused, although there is clarity, the agitation is greater, making it difficult to generate a state of focus. If it is relaxed too much and left unattended, although there is a state of focus, the sinking is greater, and there is no clarity of intense arising. It is also difficult to grasp the appropriate boundary between focus and relaxation, so considering the difficulty of generating a samadhi free from sinking and agitation, Chandra Gomi said: If effort is exerted, agitation will arise; if effort is abandoned, then laziness will arise. In this case, it is difficult to find a balance, my mind is disturbed, what should I do? And: If one enters with effort, agitation will arise; if one relaxes, then laziness will arise. In this case, it is difficult to practice in the middle way, my mind is disturbed, what should I do? This means that if one strives to focus and diligently practice, agitation will arise. Seeing this, if one relaxes the mind that is striving to enter and abandons effort, then laziness and sinking will arise in the mind, so it is difficult to find the middle way that is free from the two extremes of sinking and agitation, that is, maintaining a balanced state of mind. Therefore, he said that if one relaxes too much, there is no difficulty, but sinking will arise from it, so it is not appropriate to practice samadhi in this way. The appropriate boundary between focus and relaxation is: when one examines oneself, if one feels that raising awareness to this extent will definitely cause agitation to arise.
