If one cannot properly recognize the subtle and coarse aspects of dullness and agitation, and does not understand the pure practice of samadhi that prevents these two, then not to mention vipassana, even shamatha cannot arise. Therefore, intelligent people should become proficient in this method. Dullness and agitation are obstacles to the accomplishment of shamatha, and the identification of obstacles and the actual methods of prevention will be explained below. Here, we will discuss the conducive conditions for the accomplishment of shamatha, that is, the method of generating samadhi. Here, samadhi refers to the aspect of the mind abiding single-pointedly on the object of focus, and it must be a continuous abiding on the object. For this, two methods are needed: one is not to let the mind wander from the fundamental object of focus, and the other is to know as it is whether or not it will wander. The first is mindfulness, and the second is awareness. The commentary on the Ornament of Clear Realization states: Mindfulness and awareness bring one close, one prevents the mind from scattering from the object of focus, and the other clearly knows whether the mind is scattering. It is said. If mindfulness weakens and the object of focus is forgotten, one will be distracted and immediately lose the object of focus. Therefore, mindfulness that does not forget the object of focus is fundamental. The way in which mindfulness brings the mind close to the object of focus is: as previously explained, after clearly establishing the object of focus, at least an image will arise. Then, by knowing it, a strong way of holding is generated, and the mind's alertness is raised, and one abides without making any new thoughts. Mindfulness is described in the Compendium of Topics as: What is mindfulness? It is the mind's non-forgetting of a familiar object, having the function of non-distraction. It is said to have three characteristics. Among these, the characteristic of the object is: because mindfulness does not arise for an unfamiliar object, it is said to be for a familiar object. Here, it refers to the arising of the image of the previously determined object of focus. The characteristic of the way of holding is: the mind's non-forgetting, which refers to the aspect of the mind not forgetting the object, here referring to not forgetting the object of focus. The way of not forgetting is that when others ask or one thinks about it, one can recall what the lama taught. This does not merely mean being able to recall it, but rather that the mind focuses on the

When the mind is attached to an object of focus, one should remember it constantly and without the slightest distraction. If one is distracted, the moment a thought arises, mindfulness is lost. Therefore, once the mind has been placed on an object of focus, one should generate the thought, "I have attached my mind to this object of focus." Then, without creating new thoughts, one should maintain the continuity of that very mind's momentum without interruption. This is the crucial point of cultivating mindfulness. The difference in function is that it prevents the mind from wandering from the object of focus to other places. Disciplining the mind in this way by attaching it to an object of focus is illustrated in the scriptures with the example of taming an elephant. For example, It is good to tie an unruly elephant with many strong ropes to a very sturdy tree or pillar and then train it as an elephant trainer would. If this is not done, one must repeatedly strike it with sharp iron hooks and punish it in order to tame it. Similarly, this mind, which is like an untamed elephant, must also be bound with the rope of mindfulness to the sturdy pillar of the object of focus mentioned earlier. If it cannot be made to stay there, one must pierce it with the hook of awareness and gradually bring it under control. The *Madhyamaka-hrdaya* says: 'The elephant of the mind is difficult to tame, tie it to a sturdy pillar of focus, bind it tightly with the rope of mindfulness, and then gradually subdue it with the hook of wisdom.' The *Bhavanakrama-madhyama* also says: 'One should tie the elephant of the mind to the tree of the object of focus itself with the rope of mindfulness and awareness.' And so on. It is said in the scriptures that samadhi is achieved through reliance on mindfulness, and it is also said that mindfulness is like a rope that continuously attaches the mind to the object of focus. Therefore, the main method for achieving samadhi is the cultivation of mindfulness. And mindfulness is also a way of holding that has a definite aspect. Therefore, when cultivating samadhi, if one does not have a firm holding of certainty and simply abides, although a clear lucidity of mind will arise, a decisive, firm lucidity will not arise, and therefore strong mindfulness will not arise. Subtle dullness cannot be overcome, and therefore samadhi will become flawed. Without establishing other objects of focus such as deity images, and simply cultivating non-conceptualization, one should also remember to keep the mind from conceptualizing any object. Then, one should prevent the mind from scattering without distraction. Non-distraction is also the same in meaning as mindfulness that does not forget the object of focus, and therefore it does not go beyond the method of cultivating mindfulness. By meditating in this way, one can also ascertain.
