Therefore, one should train in the aspiration mind together with its cause. After taking the bodhisattva vows, when learning the practices, if the bondage of clinging to characteristics appears strong, one should destroy the target of clinging to characteristics with discriminating wisdom and train in emptiness like the sky and like an illusion. If the mind does not stay on the object and instead becomes a slave to distraction, then the previous masters say that one should mainly train in single-pointed concentration. By these examples, one should also understand what has not been said. In short, one should not be biased towards one side, but one's mindstream should be able to be used for all virtuous aspects. Secondly, the method of particularly training in the Vajrayana: After training in the common paths of both Sutra and Tantra, one should undoubtedly enter into mantra, because this path is more rare than other dharmas, and because it quickly perfects the two accumulations. When entering into it, as stated in the Lamp for the Path, one must first please the lama even more than previously stated, that is, one must do so with at least all the characteristics described therein. Then, one must first ripen one's mindstream with an empowerment that is taught in the original tantra class. Then, one should listen to and understand the vows and precepts taken at that time and protect them. If one incurs a root downfall, although one can take them again, it will greatly delay the arising of the qualities of the path in one's mindstream, so one should strive not to be defiled by it. One should strive not to be defiled by gross downfalls, and even if one is defiled a hundred times, one should take remedial measures, because these are the basis for meditating on the path, and without them, one will become like a dilapidated house with a collapsed foundation. In the Root Tantra of Manjushri, it says, "For those with immoral conduct, the Able One has not said that mantra will be accomplished," etc., which means that there will be no accomplishment, whether superior, middling, or inferior. In the Unsurpassed Yoga Tantra, it is also said that even if one practices without guarding the vows, with inferior empowerment, and without understanding these, nothing will be accomplished. Therefore, to say that one is practicing the path without guarding the vows and precepts is to completely stray from the ways of mantra. Like this, one should meditate on the path of mantra by guarding the vows and precepts. If one follows the three lower tantra classes, one should gradually train in the yoga of signs and the yoga without signs.
