In general, one should strive to uphold the Pratimoksha vows, especially those that one has personally undertaken. Thus, when the practices of the intermediate being are completed, one should contemplate that just as one has fallen into the ocean of suffering, so too have all beings. One should then cultivate the mind of enlightenment rooted in loving-kindness and compassion, and strive to generate it. Without it, practicing the six perfections and the two stages is like building a house without a foundation. If even a slight experience arises, one should maintain it through rituals and strive to learn its precepts, thereby stabilizing the aspiration. Then, listen to the vast practices, understand the boundaries of what to adopt and abandon, and generate the desire to learn them. When this arises, take the Bodhisattva vows through rituals and learn the six perfections that ripen one's own mindstream, as well as the four ways of gathering that ripen the mindstreams of others. In particular, guard the root downfalls as you would your life. Strive not to be defiled by minor and intermediate transgressions and misdeeds. If defiled, strive to rectify them. Then, because it is necessary to particularly study the last two perfections, become skilled in the methods of cultivating meditation and accomplish samadhi. Strive to generate a pure view of the two selflessnesses in your mindstream, regarding it as precious and placing it above all views. Understand the method of cultivating it and cultivate it. Such meditation and wisdom are what are called shamatha and vipashyana. There is nothing separate from these two, so after taking the Bodhisattva vows, it will naturally arise while learning its precepts. This also means that without practicing the lower paths, one should greatly desire to attain the higher paths, and upon hearing the higher paths, one should increasingly desire to practice the lower paths. When practicing these, one should also purify conceptual thoughts and maintain a balanced mind. For example, if one seems to have little respect for the spiritual friend who guides one on the path, one should strive to rely on them, as they are the root of all goodness. Similarly, if one lacks enthusiasm for practice, one should contemplate the precious human rebirth. If one is too attached to this life, one should primarily meditate on impermanence and the faults of the lower realms. If one seems to neglect the vows one has undertaken, one should primarily meditate on karma and its effects. If one has little renunciation for samsara, then the pursuit of liberation becomes mere words, so one should contemplate the faults of samsara. If one does not have a strong mind to do everything for the benefit of sentient beings, then one should contemplate the root of the Great Vehicle.
