Having gathered the mind from all things, focus it on the inner object. As the Ornament of the Sutras says, "The mind is focused on the object." Continuous abiding: That is, the mind initially focused does not wander elsewhere, but continuously abides in that object. As it says, "It should not be constantly distracted." Attentive abiding: If one wanders outward due to forgetfulness, one should recognize this and again attach oneself to that object. As it says, "Having quickly recognized distraction, one should again attach oneself to it." Close abiding: As the Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom say, the mind is naturally vast, so it should be repeatedly gathered and made subtle, and then abide in an ascending manner. This is in accordance with the saying, "The wise should gather the mind inward in an ascending manner." Taming: Thinking about the qualities of samadhi and delighting in samadhi. As it says, "Then, in order to see the qualities, tame the mind in samadhi." Pacifying: Seeing distraction as a fault and pacifying the dislike for samadhi. As it says, "In order to see the faults of distraction, pacify the dislike for it." Completely pacifying: Pacifying the arising of attachment, displeasure, drowsiness, and sleep, etc. As it says, "Attachment, displeasure, etc., should be pacified as they arise." Making it one-pointed: Exerting effort in order to enter effortlessly. As it says, "Then, the one with vows and diligence, with manifest effort towards the mind, obtains spontaneous arising." Equanimity: When the mind becomes equal, one should let it go, as it is taught in the Stages of Meditation. Making it a single stream: Through habituation, it spontaneously accomplishes, naturally enters, and obtains freedom, as it is taught in the Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus it is also said, "Because of habituation, it neither acts nor scatters." These names of the nine abidings of the mind are from the First Stage of Meditation: "This path of calm abiding is taught in the Perfection of Wisdom, etc." As it is quoted. The second is the six powers: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarity. How do these powers accomplish the mind? The power of hearing accomplishes abiding.

the mind is accomplished. After merely hearing from others the key to placing the mind on the object of focus, at first it is only placing the mind on the object, because it is not accustomed to repeatedly thinking about it oneself. With the power of thought, the mind that constantly abides is accomplished. Because repeatedly thinking about and guarding the continuity of that which was initially placed on the object, one initially obtains the ability to slightly continue the continuity. With the power of mindfulness, the two minds of tethering and abiding and causing to abide closely are accomplished. Because when distracted and agitated from the object of focus, one remembers the previous object and gathers it inward, and from the beginning, one generates the power of mindfulness, thereby not allowing distraction from the object of focus. With the power of vigilance, the two minds of taming and pacifying are accomplished. Because vigilance perceives the faults of scattering and the signs of near afflictions, and views them as faults, thereby not allowing them to scatter. With the power of diligence, the two minds of pacifying and making one-pointed are accomplished. Because even subtle arising thoughts and near afflictions are abandoned with effort, not accepted, and by acting in this way, dullness and agitation etc. cannot obstruct samadhi, thereby accomplishing the samadhi that arises continuously. With the power of familiarity, the mind of equipoise is accomplished. Because with the power of extreme familiarity with those previous (minds), samadhi arises that enters effortlessly and naturally. Those are as the intention of the place of hearing, therefore one should not trust explanations that differ from this. If one obtains the ninth mind, then for example, if one is extremely skilled at reciting scriptures etc., when the intention to recite arises initially and one recites, even if the mind is scattered elsewhere in the middle, the recitation itself will not be interrupted, but will proceed naturally. Similarly, initially, with the mindfulness of placing the mind on the object of focus, after having established equanimity once, from then on, even if mindfulness is not constantly applied, there will appear a state where that samadhi is not interrupted, but continuously abides for a long time. If mindfulness is constantly applied, it is called "manifestation" or "effortless," which does not require the application of effort. The arising of that
