It is with interruption. The first part has two: From the perspective of whether or not perfect pliancy is attained, it shows whether or not calm abiding is attained; and it shows how calm abiding is accomplished after perfect pliancy is attained. The first part is: As previously explained, the ninth mind is free from subtle sinking and excitement, able to practice for a long time, and without relying on the effort of constant mindfulness, it spontaneously enters. If such samadhi is attained, is calm abiding attained or not? If you think like this, there are two situations for attaining this samadhi: having attained pliancy and not having attained pliancy. If pliancy is not attained, it is in accordance with calm abiding, but it is not actual calm abiding. As it says in the *Sandhinirmocana Sutra*: "World Honored One, until when the bodhisattva has not attained physical and mental pliancy within his mind, what is it called when he contemplates? Maitreya, it is not calm abiding, it is contemplation similar to being in accordance with calm abiding, it should be said like that." Also, as it says in the *Ornament of the Sutras*: "Because of his familiarity, he is not distracted. Then, when his body and mind have attained great pliancy, it is called contemplation and co-occurring." That is, contemplation here is calm abiding. As it says in the *Middle Stages of Meditation*: "Having practiced calm abiding in this way, when his body and mind attain pliancy, and when his mind is able to freely abide on the object as desired, at that time it should be known that calm abiding is accomplished." It is clearly stated like this. As it also says in the *Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom*: "Here, a bodhisattva alone in a solitary place contemplates the meaning as he has thought, abandoning the speech of the mind, he contemplates the nature of the mind appearing in that way many times, until physical and mental pliancy have not arisen, it is contemplation in accordance with calm abiding, and when it arises, that is calm abiding." It is said like this. So, to which realm does the samadhi before pliancy has arisen belong? It belongs to the desire realm. Because there is such a one-pointed mind there, but it is not a realm of abiding in equanimity, it is not called a realm of abiding in equanimity, because there is no freedom from regret, joy, bliss, and pliancy.

As it has been accomplished, it is said in the reality of the ground. Thus, if one has not attained pliancy, even if one does not constantly rely on mindfulness, the mind will spontaneously arise without conceptualization, and that samadhi, which seems to be able to mingle with all the activities of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, is called one-pointedness of desire, but it is not true calm abiding. Secondly, what is the way to attain pliancy? And how does one enter calm abiding after attaining it? Thinking like this, pliancy is defined in the Compendium of Topics: What is extreme pliancy? It is the ability of body and mind to cut off the continuum of the afflictions of body and mind, and it is the action of removing all obscurations. So it is. The afflictions of body and mind are the inability to use body and mind as one wishes for virtuous deeds. The antidote to this, the pliancy of body and mind, is the extreme ability to use body and mind for virtuous deeds because it is free from the two afflictions of body and mind. Moreover, it obstructs the joy of abandoning afflictions, and when the physical affliction, which has become a part of afflictions, strives to abandon afflictions, the inability of the body to be heavy, etc., is removed, and lightness arises, which is physical pliancy. Similarly, it obstructs the joy of abandoning afflictions, and when the mental affliction, which has become a part of afflictions, strives to abandon afflictions, the joy of the mind abiding on a virtuous object cannot enter, and when that is removed, the mind enters the object without obstruction, which is mental pliancy. Thus, the learned scholar said: Among them, physical pliancy is the lightness that arises from the activities of the body's own nature. Mental pliancy is the pliancy of the mind that enters into correct attention, and the cause of becoming light, which is a different phenomenon arising from the mind, is that when it is combined with that, it enters the object without obstruction, therefore it is called mental pliancy. So it is said. In short, if one attains pliancy, even if one wants to strive to abandon afflictions, the inability of body and mind to enter fiercely, like an evil person entering into the activities of one's own nature, is removed, and the body and mind become extremely
