Lobten said: If the touch of the body is seized by joy, one should know that the body has become very pliable. For the sutra says that if the mind is joyful, the body will become very pliable. Thus, when the pliability of the body first arises, a great feeling of well-being arises in the body through the power of the wind, and consequently, an exceedingly excellent feeling of joy and well-being arises in the mind as well. After that, the force of the initial arising of pliability gradually diminishes. This is not because the pliability is exhausted, but because the gross pliability causes the mind to be too agitated, so it disappears, and a subtle, unmoving pliability like a shadow, which is in accordance with samadhi, arises. The joy in the mind also gradually vanishes, and then the mind stably abides on the object of focus, and one attains calm abiding that is driven by great joy and is free from non-pacification. As it says in the Hearer's Ground: When it first arises, the mind will appear to be associated with joy, extreme well-being, and supreme joy, and will also appear with focus on the object and manifest joy. After that, the force of the pliability that first arose gradually becomes very subtle, and the body becomes endowed with pliability like a shadow. The joy in the mind will also be abandoned, and the mind will be stabilized near calm abiding and will enter the object of focus in a completely peaceful manner. If such a thing occurs, one has attained calm abiding that is included in the attention and the approximation of the first dhyana, and therefore the Hearer's Ground says that one has attained the small attention of the ground of meditative stabilization. The second part has two points: the actual signs of having attention, and the explanation of cutting off doubts. The first point is: The signs by which one can recognize that oneself or another has attained attention are: the one who has attained such attention has attained the small body and mind and mental pliability included in the form aggregate, and the fourfold one-pointedness. And one is able to subdue afflictions by means of the path of quiescence or truth, and when one is inwardly absorbed in meditation, the pliability of body and mind arises quickly, and the five obscurations such as desire for sensual pleasures and sleep mostly do not arise, and even when one arises from meditative stabilization, one still possesses some pliability of body and mind, as it is explained in the Hearer's Ground.

Done. Having obtained the mental activity that possesses those signs, it becomes easy to purify the path of tranquility and insight. After having remained in meditative equipoise on single-pointed tranquility, because it can quickly induce physical and mental pliancy, pliancy will increase. As much as pliancy increases, so much does tranquility increase, therefore it is said in the Hearing Place that they promote each other. In short, when the mind becomes workable, the winds also become workable. At that time, a special physical pliancy will arise, and when it arises, a special samadhi will be born. It can also accomplish a special wind workability, thereby inducing physical and mental pliancy. Furthermore, it is said in the Hearing Ground: In order not to tend towards all signs, and to be without distraction, from the beginning, one should apply oneself to being without memory and without mental activity. This means that when first placing the mind in one-pointedness, one should abide without any memory or mental activity. If one becomes accustomed to this, it is said in the Hearing Ground: You must in every way apply yourself to one-pointedness, and to the order of tranquility of the inner mind. All the continuum of the mind and the continuation of the mind become signless, non-conceptual, and close to peace, and in this way, settle the mind. After obtaining the mind of tranquility in this way, if due to the fault of forgetfulness and unfamiliarity, signs and concepts, and afflictions close to it appear, become an entrance, become an object, then, for all these that arise, like this, relying on the faults previously seen, one should be without memory and without mental activity. In this way, through being without memory and without mental activity, if one destroys and eliminates that object, one will approach non-appearance itself. Excellent! That object is subtle and difficult to understand, therefore, in order for you to understand it, you must strongly generate intention and effort. In this way, the manner of arising samadhi has been proclaimed. Among them, up to "settle the mind," it shows the way in which the three, such as signlessness, arise sequentially from practicing as before. From "to be without memory" to "without great habit" etc.
