pa. Even after reaching the peak of existence, suffering can still arise. Those who follow your teachings, even without attaining genuine samadhi, can dispel all existence as if wearing down the eye-cover of Mara. Thus it is said. Therefore, even a yogi of Anuttarayoga needs to generate vipassanā that focuses on as many things as possible, with aspects of both calmness and agitation. Even if it doesn't generate śamatha through that, one must generate a śamatha. Moreover, the initial point of arising is during the generation stage. Thirdly, from the ninth consciousness onwards, until one has not attained attention, it is the first stage of attention. After attaining attention, the practice of attention to individual characteristics, with the intention to subdue afflictions, is said in the Śrāvakabhūmi to be the first stage of subduing afflictions. If this explanation from the Śrāvakabhūmi is not well understood, then the lowest of the paths of dhyāna and the formless realms is the preliminary concentration of the first dhyāna, in which the first of the six attentions explained is attention to individual characteristics. Therefore, one might mistakenly think that the first mind arising, encompassed by the preliminary concentration, is attention to individual characteristics. If one holds it that way, it is not reasonable. This is because, without having attained śamatha, there is no place for the preliminary concentration of the first dhyāna to arise. And if one has not attained that preliminary concentration, one cannot attain śamatha. Moreover, attention to individual characteristics is analytical meditation, so practicing it cannot newly accomplish a śamatha that one has not previously attained. Therefore, the first of the six attentions of the first preliminary concentration is the beginning of practicing vipassanā encompassed by the preliminary concentration, but not merely the beginning of the preliminary concentration itself. Because before that, one must go through śamatha encompassed by the preliminary concentration. Before attaining the samādhi encompassed by the first preliminary concentration, all samādhis are one-pointedness of desire realm mind. Therefore, if one follows the great treatises, it seems that very few people attain śamatha. Here, how the six attentions of the preliminary concentration cause one to be free from attachment to desire is not written because of the fear of excessive length. Secondly, there are four ways to train in vipassanā: relying on the conditions for vipassanā, the divisions of vipassanā, the way to practice vipassanā, and by practicing vipassanā,

The measure of achieving insight. First, there are two: generally showing how to rely on the accumulations for insight, and specifically how to establish the view. The first is: relying on a noble person, seeking to hear the Dharma from them, and properly applying the mind. These three accumulations for insight are mentioned in the Middle Stages of Meditation. That is, by relying on a wise person who understands the essential points of the scriptures without error, listening to the immaculate texts, and generating a view that realizes that through the wisdom of hearing and thinking, this is the indispensable accumulation of causes for insight. If there is no view that decisively understands the meaning of reality, it is impossible for the realization of insight that understands reality to arise. However, such a view should not rely on provisional meanings, but should be sought by relying on definitive meanings. Therefore, one must know the difference between provisional and definitive meanings, and one must understand the meaning of the definitive scriptures. If one does not rely on the treatises explained by a great chariot-founder who has become a measure, it is like a blind person without a guide, going in a dangerous direction. Therefore, one should rely on an unerring commentary. What should one rely on? The noble Nagarjuna, who was prophesied very clearly in many sutras and tantras to explain the profound meaning of being free from all extremes of existence and non-existence, which is the essence of the teachings of the Bhagavan himself, is famous throughout the three realms. Therefore, one should rely on his treatises to seek the view that realizes emptiness. As for Aryadeva, great Madhyamikas such as the teacher Buddhapalita, Jnanagarbha, Chandrakirti, and Shantarakshita also regarded him as a measure like his teacher. Therefore, the two, father and son, are the source of other Madhyamikas. Therefore, the early scholars called them the fundamental Madhyamikas, and the others the biased Madhyamikas. Some early spiritual friends say: There are two Madhyamikas named according to the way of establishing conventions: the Sutra practitioners who assert that external objects exist in conventions, and the Yoga practitioners who do not assert that external objects exist in conventions. There are also two named according to the way of asserting ultimate truth: phenomena such as sprouts and
