Those who believe that the collection of nonexistent appearances is ultimately true, are those who establish the reasoning of illusion, and those who believe that the complete severance of elaborations on appearances is ultimately true, are those who speak of non-abiding. The former are believed to be masters such as Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla, and some Indians also hold the terms such as illusion and non-abiding. Establishing the two in terms of how they accept the ultimate truth is a system that generates ignorant wonder. The great translator said so. On this, Master Ye shes de said: The noble father and sons did not clearly state the manner of the existence or non-existence of external objects in their treatises on Madhyamaka. After that, Master Legdan 'byed refuted the system of only consciousness and established the system of the existence of external objects in name. Then, Master Zhi 'tsho, relying on the treatises of Yogācāra, established that there are no external objects in name, and in reality, he created a different Madhyamaka system that shows that the mind has no nature, so the Madhyamikas became two types, the former was called the Madhyamikas who practice Sutra, and the latter was called the Madhyamikas who practice Yoga. This explanation shows that the order of events is clearly explained by the great treatises. However, although Master Chandrakirti accepts that external objects exist in name, he does not conform to other philosophical systems, so he cannot be called a follower of the Sutras, and it is unreasonable to think that he is the same as the Vaibhāṣikas. The scholars of the later dissemination in the land of snow make the distinction between Prasangika and Svatantrika for the Madhyamikas, which is in accordance with the Clear Words. Therefore, it is certain that there are two options for whether or not to accept external phenomena in name, and if we name them according to the way of generating the view of ascertaining emptiness in the mind, then it is also certain that there are two options of Prasangika and Svatantrika. So, which of these masters did they follow to seek the intention of the noble father and sons? The great Lord Atiśa mainly followed the system of Master Chandrakirti, and therefore the great senior lamas of this lineage also mainly hold this system. Master Chandrakirti believes that among the commentators on the Root Wisdom, Master Buddhapālita fully explained the intention of the noble ones, so he holds this system.

As a basis, and also drawing from the many excellent explanations of the skillful teacher, refuting those that seem slightly unreasonable, thereby explaining the intention of the noble ones. The commentaries of these two teachers, I think, are the most outstanding for explaining the treatises of the noble father and sons. Therefore, here I will follow in the footsteps of Āryadeva and Candrakīrti to ascertain the intention of the noble father and sons. The second part has three aspects: identifying the afflicted ignorance; explaining that it is the root of wandering in saṃsāra; and seeking the view of selflessness because one wants to abandon self-grasping. The first aspect is: the antidotes to other afflictions such as attachment, etc., spoken by the Victorious One, are only partial antidotes, while the antidote to ignorance that is spoken becomes the antidote to everything. Therefore, ignorance is the basis of all faults. As the Prasannapadā says: The Buddhas have taught nine kinds of teachings based on the two truths, such as the Sutra Pitaka, etc. Which of these is the most extensive and truly proclaimed in the conduct of worldly beings? There, it is said that in order to eliminate desire, it will not cause hatred to cease. It is also said that in order to eliminate hatred, it will not cause desire to cease. Whatever is said to eliminate pride, etc., will not destroy other stains. Therefore, those are not the most pervasive, and those sayings are not of great importance. Whatever is said to eliminate delusion, that will destroy all afflictions. The Buddhas say that all afflictions truly rely on delusion. Thus. Therefore, it is necessary to meditate on Suchness as the antidote to ignorance. Moreover, if ignorance is not recognized, one cannot meditate on its antidote, so recognizing ignorance is very important. Ignorance is the opposite of knowledge. And knowledge cannot be just anything, but the wisdom that realizes the Suchness of selflessness. Its opposite is not merely the absence of that wisdom, or merely being different from that wisdom, but is contrary to it. That is grasping at self, and that is divided into grasping at the self of phenomena and the self of persons. Therefore, both grasping at the self of phenomena and grasping at the self of persons are ignorance. The way it grasps is: for phenomena, by their own nature or their own characteristics.
