According to Tsongkhapa's view, there are two ways of classifying the self-grasping of phenomena as afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations, and here it is according to the former. The noble father and son (Nāgārjuna and Āryadeva) also said this. In the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness," it says: "Whatever truly conceives of things born from causes and conditions, the Teacher said that is ignorance, from which the twelve branches arise. Because of truly seeing things as empty, if one knows well, ignorance will not arise. That is the cessation of ignorance, therefore the twelve branches also cease." Here, truly conceiving of things is to believe that they are truly existent or real. This is similar to what is said in the "Precious Garland": "As long as there is grasping at the aggregates, so long will there be grasping at self." This is the same meaning as saying that as long as the true grasping of the aggregates has not been reversed, the view of the perishable collection will not disappear. The "Four Hundred Stanzas" also says: "As the body has dominion over the body, so ignorance affects everything. Therefore, all afflictions are destroyed by destroying ignorance. If one sees dependent arising, ignorance will not arise. Therefore, with all effort, one should only speak of that reason." Thus, the ignorance spoken of is when identifying the ignorance that is one of the three poisons, it is afflictive ignorance. In order to make that ignorance disappear, one must realize that the meaning of emptiness appears as the meaning of dependent arising, that is, the profound meaning of dependent arising. Therefore, afflictive ignorance must be explained as falsely imputing things as real, as explained in the commentary to that treatise. This approach is clearly explained by Chandrakirti, following the interpretation of the noble one by Buddhapālita. The second is that the ignorance that grasps at the two selves, as mentioned earlier, has common and uncommon aspects due to the different views of the internal and external schools. The common aspect is the imputed person, that is, the permanent, singular, and independent self; and the apprehended external objects, such as the appearing external things, and the partless directionless atoms; and the gross things accumulated from those atoms; and the apprehending internal awareness, such as the continuous awareness of past and future, and the partless moment of time; and the stream of awareness connecting those moments; and the imputed person who believes that the non-dual self-awareness, which is empty of the apprehended and the apprehender, is real.
