I. It is not the self-grasping of phenomena, but the two kinds of innate self-grasping that are common to all, whether or not their minds have been changed by sectarian views, and that have accompanied them since beginningless time without depending on being misled by sectarian views. These are regarded here as the root of samsara. As it says in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "Those who have spent many eons as animals have not seen this unborn, permanent self, but even those who have self-grasping see it. It is very sad for sentient beings." According to this reasoning, it is innate ignorance that binds all sentient beings in samsara, and imputed ignorance exists only in those who assert sectarian views, so it should not be the root of samsara. It is very important to gain a definite understanding of this. If you do not understand this, then when you are deciding with a view, you will mainly grasp the meaning of how innate ignorance grasps, and you will not be able to refute the objects of imputed grasping as its branches. If you abandon refuting the way innate ignorance grasps, and when you refute the two selves, you will only decide on the selflessness that was established by those who assert sectarian views, as mentioned earlier. Therefore, you must also meditate on this much when you meditate, because deciding with a view is for the sake of meditation. Therefore, even if you meditate and it becomes manifest, or you become accustomed to it, it will only amount to that much in the end. In this way, if you want to reverse the innate afflictions by seeing that the two selves that are merely imputed by imputed grasping do not exist, then that is too much. As it says in the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds, "When you realize selflessness, you abandon the permanent self, and you do not want this to be the basis of self-grasping. Therefore, it is very rare to say that those who know selflessness can completely eliminate self-view." And the commentary also says, "In order to clarify this unrelated meaning by way of an example, it is said: Even though you see a snake's nest in the wall of your own house, you dispel your doubts by saying that there is no elephant here. Like this, eliminating the fear of snakes is just becoming an enemy of others!" Although this is said about the selflessness of persons, it also applies to the selflessness of phenomena. When you realize selflessness, you abandon the imputed self, and this is not the basis of ignorance.

And also not wishing that. Therefore, it is very wonderful to say that ignorance can be eradicated by the wisdom of selflessness. Thus, it is connected. If in the Precious Garland it says: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, So long there is clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, then there is karma, And from karma comes rebirth. Thus, the clinging to the truth of the aggregates, that is, the self-clinging of phenomena, is said to be the root of samsara. And in the Entering [the Middle Way] it says: All faults of afflictions are seen by the mind to arise from the view of the destructible collection. Thus, the view of the destructible collection is said to be the root of samsara, and these two are contradictory. Because the roots of samsara are inconsistent, these two are unreasonable. If you ask this, there is no fault. Because according to this school, the two self-clinging are distinguished separately by their objects. But there is no difference in the manner of clinging, because both are in the manner of clinging to the establishment of their own characteristics. The contradiction of the two roots of samsara is because the two inconsistent manners of clinging to the object are considered to be the roots of samsara. Therefore, when the self-clinging of phenomena is shown to be the cause of the view of the destructible collection, the two parts of ignorance are shown as cause and effect. When both of these are shown to be the root of afflictions, the root of all other afflictions that are inconsistent with oneself and the manner of clinging is shown. This method is present in both of them, so it is not contradictory. Just as the two earlier and later of the same kind of ignorance do not contradict the root of samsara. Although Chandrakirti did not specifically and clearly state that the view of the destructible collection is ignorance, in general, he stated that the clinging to reality without distinguishing between person and phenomena is ignorance with afflictions. And he also believes that the self-clinging of a person is also clinging to the establishment of a person by his own characteristics. Moreover, the innate view of the destructible collection is often said to be the root of samsara. If it is thought that the ignorance of clinging to reality is different from this, then it is contradictory to place the two inconsistent manners of clinging as the root of samsara, so both should be ignorance. The object that was previously said to be imputed by innate ignorance, all other innate and conceptual afflictions seize the differences of the object and then act. Just as the other four senses, such as the eye, depend on the body sense and do not exist independently of the object, all other afflictions also depend on innate ignorance.
