If, relying on (shamatha), signs etc. appear in the mind, one should remember the faults of being controlled by those minds, and without following them, one should abide in a state of not thinking anything, it is said. From "transformation" to "above," it is said that, having become accustomed in this way, whichever of the three, signs etc., appears, it naturally subsides without relying on deliberate focus due to the force of the habit of not thinking anything. It abides in the state where those three do not appear, and is not robbed by them. The remaining part shows that tranquility is very subtle, and its explanation is difficult to understand. Among them, signs refer to the ten signs of the five objects such as form, the three poisons, and men and women. The way they disappear is: first, various signs of objects such as form will appear. Once they appear, they will naturally subside and naturally purify, and finally, when one abides in equanimity, the signs of form, sound, etc. will not appear, only the appearance of a mind that is clear, lucid, and comfortable and relaxed will appear.

If one wonders, if one obtains such a samadhi, in which stage of the five paths should it be placed? As previously stated, if it is certain that the view of selflessness is not inverted, and the samadhi is cultivated by placing it on the path of seeing, then it can be placed on the path of liberation in the stage of ordinary beings. If it is not like that, but is a protected cultivation, then, in the Śrāvakabhūmi, it is said that even the worldly paths of contemplating the aspects of calm and insight that accomplish the actual basis of the first dhyana are accomplished by relying on this samadhi. Therefore, the hermits of non-Buddhists, those who, through worldly paths, cause attachment to and separation from the lower realms down to nothingness, must also rely on this to proceed to the higher path, so it is a common samadhi for both insiders and outsiders. Furthermore, if it is accompanied by a view that realizes selflessness without inversion, and by clearly understanding the faults of all existence, one becomes disillusioned with samsara, and if it is seized by the thought of renunciation that seeks liberation, then it becomes the path of liberation. If it is seized by the mind of enlightenment, then it also becomes the Mahayana path. For example, even the act of giving a handful of food to an animal, and guarding a single precept, if seized by that intention, will gradually become the accumulation of the path to liberation and omniscience, just like that. However, here we are not examining whether one goes on the path of liberation and omniscience from the perspective of being seized by another path, but rather we are examining which path one goes on from the perspective of the nature of the samadhi itself. Therefore, for the cultivation of non-remembrance and non-attention, and for the bliss-clarity-non-conceptuality named non-grasping, there are two possibilities: whether it is a meditation on emptiness that abides in the meaning of suchness or not, so it is very important to distinguish well. For even those who have not realized the meaning of suchness, it is very easy to mistake it for realization. If one does not distinguish as previously stated, then one will also cling to the samadhi common to Buddhists and non-Buddhists as the main part of the completion stage of Anuttarayoga, so one should examine it carefully. Secondly, if one wonders, having obtained the previously mentioned non-conceptual samadhi of attention, should one cultivate only that non-conceptuality with the characteristics of clarity and non-conceptuality, etc.?

Generating Samatha meditation in the continuum is for the sake of generating Vipassana that destroys afflictions. Therefore, if Vipassana is not generated by relying on it, then no matter how accustomed one becomes to that Samatha, one will not be able to abandon the afflictions of the desire realm, let alone abandon all afflictions. Therefore, Vipassana must be cultivated. There are two types of Vipassana: one that proceeds through the worldly path of abandoning manifest afflictions, and one that proceeds through the transcendental path of abandoning the seeds of afflictions from the root. The former is the aspect of tranquility and coarseness, viewing the lower ground as coarse and the upper ground as peaceful. The latter is the practice of viewing the four truths with the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc. The main point mentioned in the scriptures is the view of realizing the selflessness of the person. Thus, whether non-Buddhists cultivate the path of the aspect of tranquility and coarseness to abandon manifest afflictions, or Buddhists cultivate the meaning of selflessness to abandon afflictions from the root, the previously mentioned Samatha is the basis for both internal and external yogis to abandon afflictions. Moreover, both the Great and Small Vehicle yogis must cultivate Samatha. Even among Mahayana practitioners, all yogis of Tantra and Paramita Vehicle must cultivate Samatha. Therefore, this Samatha is the basis for all yogis to traverse the path, and it is very important. For Buddhists, the former of the two Vipassanas is not indispensable, but the latter Vipassana, which realizes selflessness, is an indispensable limb. If one obtains the previously mentioned Samatha, which is included in the preparatory stage of the first Dhyana, even if one does not obtain the Dhyana above it or the formless Samatha, one can rely on it to cultivate Vipassana and thus attain liberation from all the bonds of Samsara. If one does not realize and cultivate the selflessness of suchness, then even if one relies on the previously mentioned Samatha and the worldly Vipassana obtained from it, and abandons all manifest afflictions up to the realm of nothingness, and obtains the mind of the peak of existence, one will not be liberated from Samsara. As it is said in "Praise Worthy of Praise": Those beings who do not turn to your Dharma are deluded by ignorance.
