If one relies on diligence with mindfulness and awareness, then one must generate a samadhi that is not interrupted by adverse factors such as sinking and excitement, and that can be maintained for a long time, and that is the eighth consciousness. The eighth and ninth consciousnesses are similar in that they cannot be interrupted by adverse factors of samadhi such as sinking and excitement. However, because this (eighth consciousness) requires continuous reliance on mindfulness and awareness, it is called manifest activity or effortful activity. In order to generate it, it is necessary to prevent even subtle phenomena such as sinking and excitement from arising, so the seventh consciousness is needed. In order to generate it, one needs to recognize the faults of being distracted by conceptual thoughts and near afflictions, and thus not be tempted by them, and one needs to have the power of awareness to guard against them, so the fifth and sixth consciousnesses are needed. Because these two (fifth and sixth consciousnesses) are accomplished by becoming the power of awareness. In order to generate such a (samadhi), if one wanders from the object of focus, one must quickly remember the object of focus, and one must have mindfulness that does not wander from the object of focus from the beginning, so the third and fourth consciousnesses are needed. Because these two (third and fourth consciousnesses) are accomplished by those two mindfulnesses. In order to generate it, one must first fix the mind on the object of focus, and one must maintain the continuity of that fixation without distraction, so the first two consciousnesses arise first. Thus, in short, one must first follow the instructions one has heard and properly practice settling the mind. Then, one must repeatedly contemplate that settled state and extend the continuity by being able to maintain it for a short time. Then, if mindfulness weakens and one becomes distracted, one must quickly gather oneself, and if one forgets the object of focus, one must quickly remember it. Then, one must also generate strong mindfulness, and generate the power of mindfulness that does not wander from the object of focus from the beginning. Once the power of mindfulness is accomplished, one must generate fierce awareness that guards against the faults of sinking, excitement, and so on, which distract one from the object of focus, by seeing those faults. Then, even if one is distracted by subtle forgetfulness, one must immediately recognize it and cut off the continuity, and after cutting it off, generate the power of effort to lengthen the continuity without being interrupted by adverse factors. When that arises, by diligently practicing, habit becomes second nature, and thus the ninth consciousness, which enters samadhi without effort, is accomplished. Therefore, before obtaining the ninth consciousness

A yogi needs to strive to settle the mind in samadhi. After attaining the ninth mind, even without deliberately striving to settle, the mind will naturally enter samadhi. Even if one attains such a ninth mind, if one has not attained pliancy, as will be explained later, one still cannot abide in tranquility, let alone attain insight. Third, if we explain according to the explanation in the Śrāvakabhūmi that there are four types of attention for the nine abidings of the mind, then, in the stage of the first two minds, one needs to control with effort, therefore it is entering with control; then, in the stage of the five minds, because of the interruption of excitement and dullness, one cannot maintain a long session of meditation, therefore it is entering intermittently; then, in the eighth mind, excitement and dullness cannot interrupt, and one can maintain a long session of meditation, therefore it is entering without interruption; then, in the ninth mind, there is neither interruption nor the need to constantly exert effort, therefore it is the attention of entering without effort. Then, in the stage of the first two minds, there is intermittent entering, and in the stage of the middle five minds, there is also the necessity of control. Why is it not said that the first two minds have the attention of intermittent entering, and the middle five minds do not have the attention of entering with control? Because for the first two minds, compared to the time the mind enters samadhi and the time it does not enter samadhi, the latter is very long; while for the middle five minds, the time abiding in samadhi is very long, therefore the latter is called the interruption of samadhi, while the former is not called that. Therefore, although both have entering with control, the presence or absence of intermittent entering is different, so these five minds are not placed in the attention of having entering with control. As the Compendium of Perfections says: The yogi who does not interrupt should diligently cultivate meditation. When tired again and again, rubbing does not produce fire. The principle of yoga is also like this, one should not abandon it without attaining distinction. Thus, one should practice. The third has three parts: indicating the boundary between achieving tranquility and not achieving tranquility, generally indicating the way to progress on the path based on tranquility, and especially indicating the way to progress on the mundane path. The first has two parts: indicating the actual meaning, and doubts about the signs associated with attention.
