Moreover, if it is thought that the experience of transformation also depends entirely on calm abiding, that would be too extreme, because the reason is the same. So, what is the way of calm abiding preceding insight? Here, the arising of insight refers to the stage of an ordinary being newly generating the realization born of meditation that has not arisen before. Among them, except for the special object of realizing emptiness, the special way of meditating on selflessness that will be explained below, in the case of the Paramita Vehicle and the three lower tantras, if one does not cultivate the meaning of selflessness by analyzing it with the wisdom of individual discrimination, the realization of insight born of meditation will not arise, so analytical meditation is necessary. Regarding this, if one seeks the understanding of selflessness before calm abiding is accomplished, and repeatedly contemplates its meaning, then because calm abiding has not been accomplished before, it is impossible to accomplish calm abiding by relying on it. If one does not analyze but engages in settling meditation, then although calm abiding can be accomplished by relying on it, there is no way to cultivate insight other than the way to cultivate calm abiding, so insight must be sought later. Therefore, it does not go beyond the order of first seeking calm abiding and then relying on it to cultivate insight. Therefore, if this system does not generate pliancy through analytical meditation of individual discrimination, then there is no correct reason to rely on first seeking calm abiding to cultivate insight. If one does not cultivate in this order, it is also very unreasonable, because the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* still says that insight is cultivated by relying on obtaining calm abiding, and says, "The latter arises depending on the former." The order of the six perfections of dhyāna and prajñā, and the order of arising the training in higher wisdom by relying on the training in higher samādhi, are all the order of cultivating calm abiding first and then cultivating insight later. Moreover, the *Yogācārabhūmi* and the *Śrāvakabhūmi* also say that insight is cultivated by relying on calm abiding. The three stages of the *Madhyamakahrdayakārikā*, the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*, and the *Meditative Stages*, as well as Jñānaśrī and Śāntipa, all say that one should first seek calm abiding and then cultivate insight. Therefore, some Indian teachers do not seek calm abiding separately, but generate insight from the beginning by analyzing with the wisdom of individual discrimination.

The idea that it arises is contrary to the treatises of the Great Vehicle, so it should not be trusted by those with intelligence. Regarding the order of tranquility and insight, it is done that way when it is first newly generated. Later, there are also those who cultivate insight first and then cultivate tranquility, so there is no fixed order. If, in the Compendium of Determinations, it says: 'Some have attained insight, but have not attained tranquility. They rely on insight to strive for tranquility.' How should this be explained? That refers to not having attained the tranquility included in the preliminary practices of the first dhyana, but not to not having attained the tranquility beyond the actual basis of the first dhyana. That is, after directly realizing the four truths, one relies on them to accomplish the tranquility beyond the first dhyana. As it says in the Ground Basis: 'Furthermore, from suffering to the path, knowing correctly as it is, one has not attained the first dhyana, etc. He immediately settles the mind after sitting down and does not discriminate the mind. He relies on that very higher wisdom to connect with the higher mind.' Because it is said that way. In general, for the sake of easy terminology, it is said that the nine states of mind are tranquility and the four, such as discrimination, are insight, but the actual tranquility and insight must be established from the arising of pliancy, as explained. The sixth has three: how to train in tranquility, how to train in insight, and how to combine the two. The first has three: relying on the conditions conducive to tranquility, how to cultivate tranquility based on that, and the extent to which tranquility is accomplished through cultivation. The first has six, dwelling in a place of conducive conditions, which refers to a place with five qualities: easy to obtain food, clothing, etc., so it is easy to obtain; there are no wild animals or unruly people and enemies, etc., so the dwelling is good; it is land that does not cause disease, so the land is good; it has friends with similar discipline and views, so the friends are good; there are not many people during the day and the sound is small at night, so it is very suitable. As it also says in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'The place where the wise practice, easy to obtain, good dwelling, good land, good friends, possessing the equipment for yogic bliss.' It is said that way.
