By attending, one attends. Thus entered, and abiding in it repeatedly, whatever arises as extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, that is called śamatha. Thus it is said. Its meaning is that without the mind wandering elsewhere, by constantly attending, the mind naturally abides on the object of focus, and when the joy and bliss of extreme pliancy of body and mind arise, then that samādhi transforms into śamatha. This arises merely from holding internally without the mind wandering from the object of focus, and does not depend on understanding the reality of things. The nature of vipaśyanā is, as stated in that very sūtra: Having obtained that extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, abiding in it, abandoning the aspects of mind, those very dharmas as thought of, within the realm of practice of samādhi, one individually contemplates and believes. Thus, in those images within the realm of practice of samādhi, analyzing the meaning of what is to be known, extremely analyzing, fully understanding, fully examining, forbearance, desire, discriminating, seeing, and contemplating, whatever it may be, that is called vipaśyanā. Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. Among these, analyzing is as-it-is, extremely analyzing is analyzing suchness, understanding is roughly understanding, and examining is examining carefully. In the Ratnamegha Sūtra, it is said: Śamatha is one-pointedness of mind. Vipaśyanā is individual contemplation. Likewise, the venerable Maitreya also said: The name of Dharma is also a collection, this should be known as the path of śamatha. The path of vipaśyanā, those meanings, should be known as distinct examination. Moreover, relying on abiding in reality, for the sake of placing mind on mind, for the sake of extremely analyzing Dharma, it is śamatha and vipaśyanā. Thus, relying on true samādhi, placing the mind is śamatha, and the wisdom of extremely analyzing Dharma is said to be vipaśyanā. It is also said similarly in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, and also in the Madhyama-krama: The distraction to external objects being pacified, constantly and naturally entering into the internal object of focus, joy arises, and possessing extreme pliancy.

The abiding of the mind itself is called calm abiding. When abiding in that calm abiding, whatever discriminates and observes only that is insight. Thus, it is also explained in the "Quintessence of the Perfection of Wisdom." As stated in the "Chapter on Grounds" and the "Quintessence of the Perfection of Wisdom," each of calm abiding and insight has both suchness and as-it-isness as its object. Therefore, calm abiding and insight are not distinguished from each other in terms of their object, and there is calm abiding that realizes emptiness, and there is also insight that does not realize emptiness. Furthermore, when the mind's running after external objects ceases and it abides in the internal object, it is called calm abiding. Insight is called insight because it sees what is superior, that is, what is special. Those who think that the mind abides without conceptualization, without the force of the clarity of awareness, is calm abiding, and that which has the force of clarity is insight, is unreasonable. Because it contradicts everything that has been said before, and especially because that difference is only the difference between whether or not there is sinking in samadhi. Because all samadhi of calm abiding must have sinking and rising, and all samadhi that is free from sinking must necessarily have the clarity of mind. Therefore, whether or not the samadhi and wisdom that focus on emptiness are present must be determined by whether or not the mind realizes either the object of selflessness or not. Because there are countless blissful, clear, non-conceptual samadhis that do not turn the mind towards that very reality. Even if one has not found the view that understands the way things are, it is manifestly established that it is sufficient to hold the mind without conceptualizing anything. Therefore, even if one does not understand emptiness, there is no obstacle whatsoever to the arising of non-conceptual samadhi. Through this means, if the mind is held for a long time, then through the power of holding the mind, the winds become workable. When that arises, it is natural for joy and bliss to arise in the body and mind, so there is no contradiction in the arising of bliss. When that arises, through the power of the clear manifestation of the feeling of joy and bliss, clarity will come to the mind. Therefore, all blissful, clear, non-conceptual samadhis cannot be established as realizing that very reality. Therefore, blissful, clear, non-conceptual states also arise in the samadhi that realizes emptiness, and many blissful, clear, non-conceptual states also arise in the samadhi that does not turn the mind towards emptiness, so the difference between the two must be distinguished.
