Not being swayed by (afflictions) is the power of having a wise minister. Similarly, even if intense love arises for sentient beings, it is not mixed with any attachment; even if unbearable, intense, and lasting compassion arises for the suffering of sentient beings, it is not overwhelmed by sorrow, There is no laziness that is uninterested in virtue; even if one has immeasurable joy, there is no frivolity that distracts the mind from its object; even if one constantly has great equanimity, one does not neglect the benefit of beings for even a moment—this is done by wisdom. Because wisdom prevents the obstacles that make it difficult to achieve these (qualities) equally. As it is said in "Praise of the Praiseworthy": "He does not abandon the nature of reality, and he also agrees with the conventional." As it is said, one does not need to abandon the nature of reality by gaining great certainty that even a particle of the object of clinging to names does not exist; one also does not contradict and agrees with the conventional by gaining unwavering certainty from the depths of one's heart that individual fruits arise from internal and external causes and conditions. It is extremely contradictory for those without wisdom, but it is not contradictory and agrees for those with wisdom. Again, as it says in the same text: "In permission and prohibition, your words are certain in some cases, and uncertain in others, but there is no contradiction between them." As it is said, there are many differences in permission and prohibition between the higher and lower vehicles, and between the sutras and tantras. When these are practiced by one person, and the two seek the meaning of the vast scriptures, it is contradictory for those without wisdom, but it is not contradictory for the wise, and this is also done by wisdom. The fault is: if one lacks wisdom, the five perfections, such as generosity, and the view will not become pure. As it says in the "Compendium of Perfections": "Without wisdom, in seeking fruit, the nature of generosity will not become pure. Abandoning the benefit of others is called the supreme generosity. The rest is a means of increasing wealth." It also says: "If the light of wisdom does not dispel the darkness, then one will not have pure discipline. In most cases, discipline without wisdom will be defiled by the faults of knowledge and become turbid with afflictions." It also says: "If the mind is disturbed by the fault of inverted wisdom, then the merit of patience will not abide there. One will hold an unpleasant attitude towards the discrimination of good and bad, and will be without merit.

Like the fame of a king. Thus it is said, greatly praised before the wise, there is nothing finer or deeper than it, not obscured by the faults of desire, on the straight path of the mind, without wisdom one does not go. Thus it is said, if one holds intelligence without diligence in the way of wisdom, then his view will never be completely pure. Thus it is. Among them, like the fame of a king, it refers to a king without merit, although he may gain fame for a time, he will eventually decline. Therefore, wisdom must be generated, and its cause is to listen to completely pure treatises in accordance with one's intellectual capacity. In the Compendium of Perfections it is said: One who has heard little is like a blind man, not knowing the way of meditation. Without that, what will he think about? Therefore, one should strive to hear, from that cause, by thinking and meditating properly, vast wisdom arises. Thus it is said. Lord Maitreya also said: Whatever is the conceptualization of the three spheres, that is considered an obscuration of knowledge. Whatever is the conceptualization of miserliness and so on, that is considered an obscuration of affliction. Other than wisdom, there is nothing else to abandon these, therefore wisdom is supreme, likewise, hearing is also supreme, therefore hearing is supreme. Thus it is said. In the Compendium of Trainings it is also said: One should seek tolerant hearing, then one should dwell in the forest, one should strive for equanimity. Thus it is said. The former holy ones also said: The Dharma that has been heard before should be made firm in the mind, and should be repeatedly thought about, measured, and contemplated. If the Dharma is allowed to be forgotten, and only a single mind-holding is practiced, then there is no help. Great meditators have great teachers, and intermediate meditators have intermediate teachers. It must be such that the more one meditates, the more one's understanding of the Dharma should increase. Thinking in this way, if the conviction is firm, then all thoughts of good and non-good are conceptualizations, therefore they are things to be abandoned, if evil friends say so, then one should think that the Dharma does not say so, and virtuous friends do not think so either, and therefore one should not listen to their words. If there is not that, then faith is only a little, and those without wisdom, when they see someone crying, they want to cry, when they see someone laughing, they want to laugh, like a stream of water, whatever anyone says they think is true, and they go wherever they are led. When learning wisdom, one must have the six perfections, that is, abiding in one's own wisdom and establishing others in wisdom, this is the

is generosity, and the rest is as before. The second is: Generosity is the same as what was said in the context of the perfections before. Loving speech is: showing the perfections to those to be tamed. Beneficial conduct is: causing those to be tamed to engage in or truly receive those meanings as they have been shown. Similarity of purpose is: teaching others from one's own position in accordance with whatever they are engaged in. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Giving is equal, showing that, causing to take, causing to enter, with oneself following, is considered loving speech, beneficial conduct, and similarity of purpose." Why is it determined to be four means of gathering? Because in order to lead the retinue to virtue, one must first make them happy about it, and that depends on giving material generosity to benefit their bodies. Having rejoiced in this way, in order to lead them onto the path, one must first make them know how to do it, and that is done by explaining the Dharma with loving speech, eliminating their incomprehension and doubts, in order to make them truly receive the meaning. Having understood in this way, beneficial conduct causes them to engage in accumulating virtue. If one does not practice oneself, but tells others that they should do it, then they will say, "You yourself do not practice, why are you telling me to practice? You still need others to tame you." And they will not listen. If one is also practicing oneself, then they will think that the virtue they are investing in will also allow them to abide in it, thinking that practicing this will benefit and make them happy, and thus they will newly join, and those who have already joined will not turn back but become stable, therefore similarity of purpose is necessary. Because the Buddhas have proclaimed that it is possible to accomplish the benefit and excellent means of all those to be tamed, therefore those who gather retinues must rely on this. Those who possess the gathering of retinues should truly rely on this method, it is able to accomplish the benefit of all beings, and is praised as an excellent means. Thus it is said. So, how does one practice these with equipoise and subsequent attainment? Jowo Rinpoche said: "The conduct of the Bodhisattva is the great six perfections, etc., with the yoga of rising from equipoise, steadily practice this path of accumulating merit." Thus it is said, like a novice Bodhisattva who has taken the vows of the sons of the Victorious Ones,
