Fourthly, if someone wonders why it is not sufficient to cultivate only śamatha or vipaśyanā individually, but both must be cultivated, consider the following analogy. For example, when lighting a lamp to view murals at night, if the lamp is very bright and not moved by the wind, the painted images will be seen very clearly. However, if the lamp is not bright or, even if bright, is moved by the wind, the images will not be seen clearly. Similarly, to view the profound meaning, one needs both the wisdom that ascertains the meaning of suchness without any distortion and the unwavering stability of mind that remains as desired on its object. Only then will suchness be seen clearly. Even if there is non-conceptual samādhi where the mind abides without wandering elsewhere, if there is no wisdom that realizes the nature of reality, no matter how accustomed one becomes to samādhi, it is impossible to realize the nature of reality. Even if one has a view that understands selflessness, if there is no stable samādhi where the mind remains one-pointedly, it is impossible to clearly see the meaning of the nature of reality. Therefore, both śamatha and vipaśyanā are necessary. The *Bhāvanākrama II* states: "Vipaśyanā alone, without śamatha, will cause the yogi's mind to be distracted towards objects, and it will not become stable like a lamp in the wind. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not arise very clearly, so both should be cultivated equally." It also says: "By the power of śamatha, just as a lamp is placed in a windless place, the winds of various conceptual thoughts will not cause the mind to waver. By vipaśyanā, all nets of wrong views are abandoned, and it cannot be swayed by others. As stated in the *Candrapradīpa Sūtra*: 'By the power of śamatha, it becomes unwavering. By vipaśyanā, it becomes like a mountain.'" This is how it is. Therefore, considering that by examining with wisdom endowed with the equipoise of śamatha, which is free from dullness and excitement, one will come to know the correct meaning, the *Dharmasamgraha* states: "If the mind is placed in equipoise, one will know the truth as it is." The *Bhāvanākrama I* states: "Because the mind wavers like water, it cannot abide without the basis of śamatha. A mind that is not placed in equipoise cannot know the truth as it is."

Even the departed ones, having equally abided, thoroughly understand as it is. Thus it was declared. Thus it is. If shamatha is accomplished, not only is the fault of wavering of the wisdom that properly examines selflessness averted, but also all the analytical meditation done with the wisdom of individually contemplating impermanence, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, loving-kindness, compassion, and cultivating the mind of enlightenment, etc., is also free from the fault of being distracted by the object of focus. Because it allows one's own object of focus, whatever it may be, to not be distracted elsewhere, all the virtuous deeds one does become powerful. Before shamatha is attained, for the most part, one's focus is distracted to other things, so all the virtuous efforts one makes are weak. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "A person whose mind is completely distracted dwells in the fangs of the afflictions." And: "Recitations and ascetic practices, even if practiced for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, the wise say that they are meaningless." As it is said. Fifth, as it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Having understood that afflictions are completely destroyed by vipashyana that is fully endowed with shamatha, one should first seek shamatha." As it is said, one should first accomplish shamatha and then, relying on that, meditate on vipashyana. Here, one might think: In the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation, it says: "Its object of focus is not fixed." Thus it is said that the object of focus of shamatha is not fixed. As explained earlier, since the object of focus of shamatha has two aspects, the object possessing qualities and the nature of reality, first, having understood the meaning of selflessness, and then focusing on that and meditating, shamatha in which the mind does not wander elsewhere, and vipashyana focusing on emptiness, both can be generated at the same time. Why is it that one first seeks shamatha and then meditates on vipashyana? Regarding that, the way shamatha precedes vipashyana is: To generate an understanding of the view of realizing selflessness, it is not necessary for shamatha to precede it, because it is seen that the view can arise even without shamatha. To generate an experience of transforming the mind based on that view, it is also not necessary for shamatha to precede it, because even without shamatha, one can repeatedly examine and become accustomed to it through the wisdom of individual contemplation, so it is not contradictory for a transformation of mind to arise. If it were contradictory, then cultivating impermanence and the faults of samsara and the mind of enlightenment
