If one recognizes something as belonging to another and uses it for oneself, it becomes theft, and if the value is sufficient, it becomes a defeat for individual liberation. If one uses the possessions of sentient beings themselves, thinking that it is for their benefit, there is no fault, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings. The way defeat occurs is: when one wholeheartedly dedicates something to a human being, and that person recognizes it and takes possession of it, if one recognizes it as belonging to another and takes it for one's own benefit, if the value is sufficient, there is a possibility of defeat, so be mindful. Furthermore, from the bottom of one's heart, joyfully transforming countless varieties of objects to be given through imagination, and cultivating the intention to give them to sentient beings, this cultivation of intention increases immeasurable merit with little effort, and this is also the giving of a wise bodhisattva, as stated in the Bodhisattva Grounds. When studying the perfection of giving, if one studies it in a way that is endowed with the six perfections, the power will be great. That is, at that time, having the intention of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, guarding the discipline of vows, having faith in the Dharma of omniscience, enduring the abuse of others with patience, cultivating diligence to increase it more and more, single-pointed concentration that is not mixed with the Lesser Vehicle, meditating on dedicating the virtue to perfect enlightenment, and having the wisdom to know that the object of giving, the giver, and the receiver are like illusions, this is what makes the six perfections complete. Secondly, there are three points: the nature of discipline, the divisions, and the way to generate it in the mindstream. The first point is: the mind of abandoning, turning away from the very basis of harming others, is discipline, which is considered to be mainly the discipline of vows. The habituation of that mind becomes more and more complete, and it becomes the perfection of discipline. But it is not established by externally cutting off all harm to sentient beings. As it says in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: From obtaining the mind of abandoning, it is taught that discipline has reached the other shore. So it is. Secondly, there are three points, among which, the discipline of vows is: if considered from the point of view of having intention, it is the ten abandonments of abandoning the ten non-virtues. If considered from the point of view of its own nature, it is the seven abandonments of body and speech that abandon the seven non-virtues. Regarding this, the Bodhisattva Grounds says: The discipline of vows in the mindstream of a bodhisattva is the intention spoken of in relation to the seven classes of individual liberation.

is. If one is a Bodhisattva who holds the Pratimoksha vows, then the actual Pratimoksha vows of either a householder or a renunciate, and the vows of abandonment that are common to them, are the discipline of vows. If one is a Bodhisattva vow holder who is not suitable as a basis for the Pratimoksha vows, then the vows of abandonment that abandon the natural faults and the prescribed faults of various kinds that are common to the Pratimoksha, are the discipline of vows. The Pratimoksha vows in the Bodhisattva's continuum, although they are the discipline of the Bodhisattva's discipline, are not the actual Bodhisattva vows. The rest have a common basis with the Bodhisattva vows. The discipline of accumulating virtue is: focusing on virtues such as the six perfections, generating what has not yet arisen in one's own continuum, not losing what has already arisen, and increasing it more and more. The discipline of working for the benefit of sentient beings is: through discipline, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings in this and future lives without fault, as appropriate. The third is: purity of discipline depends on taking it into practice as prescribed for entering and leaving. This in turn depends on following a strong and stable desire to protect. To generate this, one must meditate for a long time on the faults of not protecting and the benefits of protecting. This has been explained earlier in the context of the intermediate being. Furthermore, the Compendium of Perfections says: If one cannot benefit oneself by breaking the discipline, how can one have the power to benefit others? Therefore, one should not relax one's respect for this by striving to benefit others well. It also says: Discipline is the path to attain special qualities, and it is practiced together with those who have compassion. It is the essence of pure wisdom, and it is called the supreme thing that becomes an ornament free from faults. It is a pleasing fragrance in all three realms, and it is an ointment that does not contradict renunciation. Even if the appearance is the same, if one has discipline, then among people, that one becomes a noble being. Relying on this, the continuum goes from higher to higher, and one becomes equal in learning with the great Bodhisattvas who have compassion, and one obtains pure wisdom by abandoning all the seeds of misconduct, and other ornaments are very young, etc.
