The master of Sangwa. The omniscient wisdom arises from the root of compassion. It arises from the cause of the mind of enlightenment. It is perfected by means. Compassion has already been explained. The mind of enlightenment is twofold: conventional and ultimate mind of enlightenment. Means are the perfection of generosity and so on, as explained by the great chariot master Kamalashila. Some, such as the Chinese Heshang, who have inverted conceptions about such a path, say that as long as it is conceptual thought, not to mention bad conceptual thought, even good conceptual thought binds one to samsara, and its fruit does not transcend samsara. It is like being bound by a golden chain and a rope, white and black clouds obscuring the sky, and white and black dogs biting, all of which cause suffering. Therefore, abiding without any conceptualization is the path to enlightenment. Generosity and discipline, etc., are taught for the sake of foolish beings who cannot meditate on such definitive meaning. Engaging in those practices after attaining the definitive meaning is like a king becoming a commoner or seeking the tracks of an elephant after finding the elephant. Among them, Heshang cited eighty sutras praising non-conceptualization to prove his point. This person greatly slanders all means, saying that they are not the true path to enlightenment. Because the wisdom of individual analysis is used to prevent the practice of selflessness, thereby abandoning the ultimate truth from afar, Kamalashila refuted this well with immaculate scripture and reason, and expanded the good path that pleases the Buddhas. However, even now, some still despise aspects of practice such as guarding vows, abandoning them when meditating on the path, and acting as before. Some have no understanding of view other than slandering means. Others abandon seeking the view of suchness with the wisdom of individual analysis and seem to think that the Chinese meditation of not thinking about anything is good.

To say that "those in false realms do not need to meditate" contradicts all the scriptures and seems to be simply beyond the path of reason. What is to be attained by the Mahayanists is non-abiding Nirvana. Among them, not abiding in samsara is accomplished through the wisdom that realizes Suchness and the path stages based on the ultimate truth and the profound path, as well as the accumulation of wisdom and the aspect of wisdom. Not abiding in peaceful Nirvana is because it must be accomplished through the wisdom of knowing as it is and the path stages based on conventional truth and the vast path, as well as the accumulation of merit and the aspect of means. As it is also said in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra: "The accumulation of wisdom will abandon all defilements. The accumulation of merit will make all sentient beings live happily. O Blessed One, therefore, Bodhisattvas, great beings, should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom." And, in the Vimalakirti Sutra, it is also said: "What is the bondage of Bodhisattvas? What is liberation?" The answer is: "Wisdom not grasped by means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by means is liberation. Means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Means grasped by wisdom is liberation." And, in the Gaya Gori, it is said: "The path of Bodhisattvas, in short, is these two. What are the two? They are means and wisdom." So it is. The meaning of these is also stated in the Lamp for the Path: "Without the union of the Perfection of Wisdom, the obscurations will not be exhausted. Therefore, in order to completely eliminate the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, the yoga of the Perfection of Wisdom should always be meditated with means. Wisdom without means, and means without wisdom, are said to be bondage, therefore, neither should be abandoned." And, "Abandoning the Perfection of Wisdom, the Perfection of Generosity, etc., all accumulations of virtue, the Buddhas have taught as means. By the power of familiarizing with means, if one meditates on wisdom, one will quickly attain enlightenment, not by meditating on selflessness alone."
