should be done. If equanimity is accomplished, then cultivate equanimity towards friends. To be unequal to them is to discriminate with attachment and aversion, or to be unequal with the size of attachment. If it is equal, then meditate on equanimity towards enemies. To be unequal to them is to hate them by viewing them as completely incompatible. If it is equal to them, then meditate on equanimity towards all sentient beings. There are two aspects to this: From the perspective of sentient beings, all sentient beings equally want happiness and do not want suffering. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think of being close to some sentient beings and helping them, and alienating some sentient beings and harming them or not helping them. From one's own perspective, since beginningless time, there has not been a single sentient being in samsara who has not been my relative hundreds of times. Therefore, what should I be attached to, and what should I hate? This is what is said in the Middle Stages of Meditation. Also, regarding attachment to relatives, it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Daughter Moon Excellent: I have killed all of you in the past, and I have also been cut and hacked by you in the past. All are mutually hostile and killing. How can you still generate a mind of attachment? As mentioned earlier in the context of the faults of uncertainty, contemplate the way in which all enemies and relatives quickly change and depart. This will stop both anger and attachment. This needs to be done by taking enemies or relatives as special objects, so there is no need to stop the thought of enemies and relatives, but to stop the thought of discriminating with attachment and aversion by using enemies and relatives as reasons. Second, there are three: meditating on being a mother, remembering kindness, and meditating on repaying kindness. First, because samsara has no beginning, one's own birth also has no beginning, so having gone through countless births and deaths, there has never been a time in samsara when this body has not been taken, and there has never been a time when it has not been born in this place. The sutras say that there has never been a time when one has not been a relative such as a mother. Not only has it not been done in the past, but it will also be done in the future, so think like that and seek a firm conviction that you have never been a mother. Because if this is born, it is easy to generate remembering kindness, etc., and if this is not born, there is no basis for remembering kindness, etc. Second, after contemplating all sentient beings as mothers, it is easy to generate if you first contemplate the mother of this life.

One should meditate as Poto-wa wished, visualizing a clear image of one's mother in front. Think: not only now, but from beginningless samsara, this mother has been my mother countless times. Think like this several times. In this way, when she was not being a mother, she protected me from all harm and accomplished all benefits and happiness. Especially in this life, first she carried me in her womb for a long time. Then, at the time of birth, she held the fuzzy, warm me in her arms, amused me with her ten fingers, fed me milk, tasted the food to see if it was suitable, wiped my snot with her mouth, wiped away impurities with her hands, and nourished me tirelessly with various methods. Moreover, she gave me food and drink when I was hungry and thirsty, clothes when I was cold, and wealth that she herself was reluctant to use when I was poor. These things were not easily obtained, but were given to me after being mixed with sin, suffering, and harsh words, and after being searched for with great effort. If the child suffered from illness or other sufferings, she would rather die herself than have the child die, and would rather be sick herself than have the child be sick, choosing this from the depths of her heart, and making efforts to eliminate the child's suffering. In short, she accomplishes whatever benefits and happiness she knows and is capable of, and focuses single-mindedly on eliminating harm and suffering. When, through such meditation, a feeling of gratitude arises that is not merely lip service, then regard the father and other friends as mothers and meditate. Then, regard the neutral ones as mothers and meditate. When a thought similar to that of a friend arises towards them, then regard the enemies as mothers and meditate. When a thought similar to that of a mother arises towards them, first regard all sentient beings as mothers, and then gradually expand the scope and meditate. Third, in this way, due to the transmigration of birth and death, except for not recognizing them, abandoning my kind mothers who are suffering and helpless, and trying to liberate myself from samsara, there is nothing more shameless than that. As it says in the "Letter of Instruction": "Close relatives are trapped in the ocean of samsara, clearly appearing as if they have fallen into an abyss, but because of the transmigration of birth and death, they are not recognized. If one were to liberate oneself alone, there would be no greater shame than that." Therefore, abandoning such kind mothers is something that even the lowest of people would not do, let alone what we should do.
