Because it is impossible to do it that way, taking on the responsibility of liberating all beings depends on it; if that responsibility is not taken on, one cannot be considered a Mahayanist, so compassion is initially important. In the teachings expounded by inexhaustible wisdom, it is said: Venerable son of Sharadvati, moreover, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible. What is the reason for that? Because it is a precursor. Venerable son of Sharadvati, for example, the inhalation and exhalation of breath is a precursor to the life force of a person. Likewise, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is a precursor to the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle. And also, in the Gaya Gori it is said: Manjushri, what is the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas? What is the place? Manjushri replied: Son of the gods, the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas is great compassion. The place is sentient beings. So it is. Secondly: Having entered after generating such a mind once, because the number of sentient beings is vast and their actions are evil, and what is to be taught is also extremely difficult and limitless, and the time required is immeasurable, seeing these things, one becomes discouraged and falls into the Hinayana. Therefore, it is not just generating great compassion once, but cultivating the habit of increasing it, not looking at one's own happiness and suffering, not being weary of benefiting others, thereby easily perfecting all accumulations. Thirdly: When the Buddhas attain the fruit, they do not abide in peace like the Hinayana, but benefit beings as long as space exists, and this is also the power of great compassion, for without it, one would become like a Shravaka. For example, just as the initial seed, the intermediate water, and the final ripening are important for crops, likewise, compassion is important in the beginning, middle, and end for the crop of the Buddha, as stated by glorious Chandrakirti. Therefore, Zhang Nachungtonpa said to Jowo: Even if you ask for Jowo's advice, he will only say to abandon the world and meditate on Bodhicitta. Geshe Tonpa said angrily: That is the essence of Jowo's advice! He said, he is someone who understands the key points of the Dharma! Obtaining certainty is also difficult only in this matter, so one must repeatedly accumulate and purify, and read the scriptures and commentaries such as the Avatamsaka Sutra.

Therefore, one must seek a firm conviction. As the glorious Makhol said: Your mind is a jewel, That seed of perfect enlightenment, Only you, the brave one, can comprehend its essence, Others cannot fathom it. As it is said. The second aspect has two parts: How recognizing the mother becomes the cause for love, and how higher intention and bodhicitta become the result. The first aspect is: Generally, merely wanting to be separated from suffering can arise from repeatedly contemplating the suffering of sentient beings. However, for that mind to arise easily, powerfully, and stably, it is necessary for the sentient being to have a pleasing, cherished, and pitiable appearance. It is like being unable to bear the suffering of a relative, rejoicing at the suffering of an enemy, and mostly ignoring the suffering of a neutral person, giving rise to indifference. The first of these is: It is because there is something pleasing, and the more cherished it is, the more unbearable the suffering becomes. For small to medium cherishing, the degree of unbearableness is small. If it is extremely cherished, even small suffering will give rise to great unbearableness. Seeing the suffering of an enemy, not only does the desire to be separated from suffering not arise, but the thought of it being even greater or not being separated from it arises. This is because of the unpleasantness. Moreover, the greater the unpleasantness, the greater the joy at the suffering. There is neither unbearableness nor joy at the suffering of a neutral person between enemy and relative, because there is neither pleasantness nor unpleasantness. Doing so, contemplating sentient beings as relatives is for the sake of generating pleasantness, and the ultimate purpose of relatives is not the mother. Therefore, contemplating the mother, remembering her kindness, and repaying her kindness are the means of accomplishing pleasantness and cherishing. Love that cherishes sentient beings as dearly as one's only child is the result of these three, and it causes compassion to arise. There is no certainty of cause and effect between love that desires to meet with happiness and compassion. Contemplating sentient beings as relatives as the cause of generating bodhicitta is what the teacher Chandrakirti, the monk Chandra, and the teacher Kamalashila said. The second aspect is: When compassion arises from gradually training the mind in this way, for the benefit of sentient beings
