And (the Buddha) also said in person: In general, whatever good or bad happens, rely on the Dharma. Among them, if you rely on how it arises from the Vinaya, you can clearly distinguish what is unnecessary repetition, what is pure, what is pleasing, and what has a perfect result. Geshe Tonpa also said: Some people rely on the Vinaya to belittle the Tantra, and rely on the Tantra to belittle the Vinaya. The Vinaya becomes the assistant of the Tantra, and the Tantra becomes the assistant of the Vinaya. This is indispensable in the lineage of my guru. Jowo (Atisha) also said: In our India, if a major or sudden event occurs, the holders of the Tripitaka will gather together to determine whether the matter is prohibited by the Tripitaka, whether it is contrary to the Tripitaka, and then deal with it on this basis. In Vikramaśīla, we also determine whether the matter is prohibited by the practice of Bodhisattva, whether it is contrary to the practice of Bodhisattva. The affairs of the Sangha are managed by the holders of the Vinaya. The mind-training method of the common path with the middle person has been explained. In this way, by practicing the faults of samsara from various angles for a long time, seeing all the worlds as burning flames, the mind is tormented by the desire to obtain liberation that pacifies afflictions and suffering. If you practice the three trainings, you can be liberated from samsara. Although this will not regress like the glory of the heavens, because the elimination of faults and the attainment of merits are only one-sided, self-interest is not yet complete. Because of this, altruistic behavior is only temporary, and eventually the Buddha's persuasion is needed to enter the Mahayana. Therefore, wise people should enter the Mahayana from the beginning. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: "Those two vehicles, which are powerless to accomplish the benefit of the world, should be abandoned forever. The Mahayana, taught by the Victorious Buddha with compassion, has the nature of benefiting others. The wise should enter it." Here, the happiness, majesty, and talent of great people should be used to take on the burden of benefiting others. Merely pursuing self-interest is no different from animals. Therefore, the behavior of great beings is to focus wholeheartedly on the benefit and happiness of others. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Very easy to obtain

Even livestock eats a few mouthfuls of grass by itself. If tormented by extreme thirst, it will happily drink if it finds water. Whoever strives to benefit others here, that is the splendor of this place, that is the talent of the happy one, it is most excellent. The sun is great, riding a horse and running, what is it that makes things appear? What is it that the earth supports the world without piling up burdens? Those great ones have no self-interest, that is their nature. They are all focused on the taste of benefiting and bringing happiness to the world. So it is said. Thus, seeing beings tormented by suffering, one who hurries for their sake is called a person, and is also called a wise person. From that very text: The world is confused by the thick clouds of ignorance, beings have become confused. Seeing them helplessly falling into the raging fire of suffering. Whoever is anxious and diligent, as if a fire is blazing on their head. Here, those are the persons, those are also the wise ones. So it is said. Therefore, it is the source of all goodness for oneself and others. The medicine that cures all decline. The great path traveled by all wise beings. Seeing, hearing, remembering, and touching also become nourishment for all beings. By engaging in benefiting others, the means to accomplish one's own benefit completely without lacking anything. To enter the Great Vehicle that possesses great skillful means, alas! I think I have found it well, I will enter this supreme vehicle with whatever ability a person has. Thus, there are three ways to train the mind in the stages of the path of a great person: Showing that the only gateway to the Great Vehicle is the arising of the mind of enlightenment. How that mind arises. How to train in conduct after generating the mind of enlightenment. The first is: Thus, if one wants to enter the Great Vehicle, one wonders from which gate to enter? To this, the Victorious One has spoken of two Great Vehicles, the Perfection Vehicle and the Mantra Vehicle, and there is no other Great Vehicle besides these. Whichever of these two gates one enters, the gateway is only the mind of enlightenment. When that arises in the mindstream, even if no other qualities have arisen, it is established as a Great Vehicle practitioner. When one is separated from that, even if one has qualities such as realizing emptiness, one falls to the level of a Hearer and so on, and degenerates from the Great Vehicle, this is spoken of in many Great Vehicle scriptures, and it is also established by reason.
