One should increase (virtue). As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "Discipline is like the earth, whether fertile or barren, It is said to be the foundation and support of all good qualities." Also, in the "Questions of Strong Arms": "Just as all crops depend on the earth, And grow without harm, Likewise, relying on discipline, the supreme white Dharma, Is moistened by the water of compassion and grows completely." One should think in this way. Just as keeping vows after taking them has great benefits, not keeping them also has great faults. In the Sutra "Most Cherished by Monks": "For some, discipline is happiness, For some, discipline is suffering. Those with discipline are happy, Those who break discipline suffer." And also, in the "Root Tantra of Manjushri": "In this repetition, if discipline is broken, There will be no supreme accomplishment, Intermediate accomplishments may or may not exist, And the lowest accomplishment will not exist either. For those who break discipline, the Able One (Shakyamuni Buddha) Has not said that mantras will be accomplished, Nor is it the place and direction of the city of Nirvana. For this evil child, Where will the accomplishment of mantras be? For this person who breaks discipline, Where will there be a good rebirth? They will not be reborn in the heavens, Nor will they be reborn in a supreme place of happiness, So what need is there to say that the mantras spoken by the Victorious Ones, Will be accomplished?" One should repeatedly think about the faults of not keeping discipline. In the "Samadhiraja Sutra": "Wearing the clothes of a white-clad householder, Whatever precepts I have spoken, At that time, for those monks, Those precepts will also become non-existent." Just as it is said in the sutra that the complete keeping of the five precepts spoken to lay practitioners will also become non-existent for monks, in this time, striving for discipline is especially fruitful, so one should strive. In that very sutra it says: "For countless eons, as many as the sands of the Ganges, With a joyful mind, offering food and drink, Umbrellas, banners, and garlands of lamps, Serving countless billions of Buddhas. Whenever the sacred Dharma is greatly destroyed, And the teachings of the Sugata are about to decline, Practicing one precept day and night, This merit is far superior to that." Thus it is proclaimed. So, how to practice the precepts? Regarding the four causes of falling into transgressions, the first is not knowing the antidote:

One should listen to and understand the teachings. As an antidote to carelessness, there is mindfulness, which does not forget the aspects of what to adopt and abandon, and awareness, which constantly examines the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and knows what to engage in, good or bad, and knowing shame, which avoids wrongdoing out of consideration for oneself or the Dharma, and knowing embarrassment, which avoids wrongdoing out of fear of being criticized by others, and being cautious out of fear of the consequences of misdeeds, and so on. As an antidote to disrespect, one should respect the teacher, his precepts, and those who practice the same pure conduct. As an antidote to many afflictions, one should examine one's own mind and diligently apply the antidote to the most dominant affliction. If one does not make such effort, thinking that it is not a big deal to violate just this little bit, and becomes lax in the precepts, one will only obtain suffering. The Vinaya-vibhaṅga says: "Whoever thinks lightly of the compassionate teachings of the teacher and slightly transgresses them, will obtain suffering and dependence from that, like cutting down a mirage and losing a grove of mangoes. Here, some may violate the great word of the king, but will not receive punishment several times afterwards. But if one violates the teachings of the Able One in an improper way, one will go to the animal realm, like a worm in an erala leaf." Therefore, one should strive not to be defiled by faults and transgressions, and even if one is slightly defiled, one should not be complacent, but should strive to purify the faults and sins as it is said in the scriptures. Guarding in such a way is the same for mantra practitioners as it is for those who hold the vows of individual liberation. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Strong Arms: "The Victorious One has spoken of the discipline of individual liberation, the pure moral conduct, the complete Vinaya. Householder mantra practitioners should abandon the signs and rituals, and practice the rest." This means that householder mantra practitioners should also abandon the attire and ritual activities of renunciates, as well as some individual precepts, and should do the rest as it is said in the Vinaya. So what need is there to say about renunciate mantra practitioners? Khamlungpa also said: "When there is a famine, everything will come to the top of the grain. Similarly, everything will revolve around moral conduct, so strive to guard it. Pure moral conduct will not arise without thinking about karma and its effects. Therefore, thinking about karma is the essential instruction." Shara
