It is enough to just generate the wish to attain Buddhahood. If you add aspiration to that, you might wonder what to do. Although the immeasurable love and compassion that wishes sentient beings to be happy and free from suffering is also present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers, taking on the responsibility of accomplishing the happiness of all sentient beings and eliminating their suffering is unique to Mahayana practitioners. Therefore, one must generate an extraordinary aspiration with courage. As stated in the commentary on the Ratnagotravibhāga, this can be understood from the sutra inquired by Mati Sagara. Once the mind of liberating sentient beings has arisen in this way, one realizes that in one's current state, one cannot fully accomplish the benefit of even one sentient being. Moreover, even if one attains the state of two Arhats, one can only benefit a few sentient beings, and even that benefit is limited to achieving liberation. One cannot bring them to Buddhahood. Thinking about who can fully accomplish the temporary and ultimate benefit of limitless sentient beings, one realizes that only the Buddha has that ability. Therefore, for the benefit of sentient beings, one generates the wish to attain Buddhahood. The second (division) has three parts: cultivating the intention to seek the benefit of others, cultivating the intention to seek enlightenment, and recognizing the result of cultivation—bodhicitta. The first (division) has two parts: establishing the basis for generating that intention, and the actual generation of that intention. The first (division) has two parts: establishing equanimity towards sentient beings, and establishing that everything is pleasing in appearance. The first, as explained earlier in the context of the lesser and intermediate persons, the sequence of preliminaries, etc., should also be taken and practiced here. Among them, first, one must prevent the partiality of generating attachment towards some sentient beings and hatred towards others. If equanimity is not established, then whatever love and compassion arises will be partial, and it will not arise towards those who are not partial. Therefore, one should cultivate equanimity. Among them, there are two ways of speaking, one is to establish the aspect of sentient beings being free from afflictions such as attachment and hatred, and the other is for oneself to be free from attachment and hatred towards sentient beings and to have equanimity. Here, it is the latter. The order of cultivating this (equanimity) is that, because it is easy to arise, one should first use a neutral person who has neither benefited nor harmed as the object of focus. Afterwards, eliminate attachment and anger, and thereby establish equanimity.
