Meditate also on friends, then neutrals, then enemies, and then all sentient beings in the ten directions. Thus, meditating on equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion by separating the objects individually and in sequence is done by the master Kamalashila, following the Sutra of the Abhidharma. This is extremely important because if you do not separate them individually and practice by focusing on the general from the beginning, it seems like it will arise, but if you think about each one, it seems like nothing will arise. From each one, take out the experience of transformation as previously described, increase it, and finally, if you cultivate by focusing on the general, then whether you focus on the group or the individual, it will arise purely. The way to meditate is: Think about how those sentient beings who have been your mothers experience suffering, both collectively and individually, after falling into existence. The measure of the arising of compassion is: In the first part of the Stages of Meditation, it says: When compassion in the form of wanting to completely eliminate suffering for all sentient beings arises spontaneously, just like an agreeable child is uncomfortable, and you yourself also arise in the same way, then that is complete, and therefore you obtain the name of great compassion. Just like the mother feels compassion for her beloved little son who is suffering, when that much thought arises, and compassion arises spontaneously for all sentient beings, then it is said to be complete with the characteristics of great compassion. By this, one should also know the measure of the arising of great loving-kindness. The third is: After meditating on loving-kindness and compassion in this way, alas, these sentient beings who are dear and agreeable to me are so lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering. How can these beings meet with happiness and be liberated from suffering? Thinking in this way, take on the burden of liberating them, and train your mind even with just words. This was also mentioned slightly in the context of repaying kindness, but what is taught here is that it is not enough to just have loving-kindness and compassion that thinks, 'If only they would meet with happiness and be separated from suffering.' It is to show that you must generate loving-kindness and compassion that can bring forth the thought, 'I will accomplish benefit and happiness for sentient beings.' Those are not just the essence of the session, but also in between sessions, etc.

It is said in the Middle Stages of Meditation that one should remember in all activities and practice as usual. Secondly, if, through the practice of the stages mentioned earlier, one sees the need to attain enlightenment for the benefit of others, and thus arises the desire to attain it, that is certainly possible. However, that alone is not enough. As mentioned earlier during the refuge, through contemplating the qualities of body, speech, mind, and activity, one should first strive to increase faith. Then it is said that faith becomes the basis for desire. Therefore, one should generate a desire from the depths of one's heart to attain those qualities, and one should establish a firm conviction that it is also necessary to attain omniscience for one's own benefit. Thirdly, the general definition is, as stated in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "The generation of the mind [of enlightenment] is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment." Like that. The classification is, following the Chapter on the Ten Grounds of the Flower Ornament Sutra, the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior states: "Just as one knows the difference between wanting to go and going, so too, the wise should gradually understand the difference between these two." Thus, it speaks of the two, aspiration and engagement. Although there seem to be many differences here, the mind that wishes to become a Buddha for the benefit of sentient beings is the aspiration mind, and engaging that mind after taking vows is the engagement mind, as stated in the First Stages of Meditation. Secondly, relying on the treatises of Shantideva for training, there are three points: contemplating the benefits and drawbacks of exchanging self and others and not exchanging them; showing that if one is accustomed to this mind, one can generate it; and the stages of meditating on how to exchange self and others. First, as stated in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: "Whoever wishes to quickly protect themselves and others should practice the secret and supreme conduct of exchanging self and others." And, "All the happiness in the world comes from the desire for the happiness of others; all the suffering in the world comes from the desire for one's own happiness. What need is there for further elaboration? Fools seek their own benefit, while the Able One acts for the benefit of others; observe the difference between these two. If one does not truly exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not only fail to attain Buddhahood, but there will also be no happiness even in samsara." Thus it is said. Therefore, one should contemplate that cherishing oneself is the door to all downfalls, while cherishing others is the source of all perfections. Second
