No, it's like pointing out the ground for an ordinary horse to run on. So it is said. Thus, this instruction, starting from how to rely on a spiritual friend, up to the point of śamatha and vipaśyanā, completely gathers all the essential points of the path, including the scriptures and their commentaries. For all of these, one engages in settling meditation for those that require settling meditation, and one examines with discriminating wisdom for those that require analytical meditation, thereby integrating them into the order of practice and guiding one. Therefore, all the scriptures appear as instructions, and certainty arises that one holds them as the supreme of instructions, thereby completely eliminating the wrong conceptions that hold those to be merely appendages of the Dharma and not actual instructions. Third, the greatness of easily attaining the intention of the Buddhas is: Although the great treatises, including the scriptures and their commentaries, are the supreme of instructions, a beginner who has not fully trained cannot attain the intention even if they enter those treatises without relying on the oral instructions of a guru. Even if they can attain it, it depends on a very long time and great effort. If one relies on this kind of guru's oral instructions, one will easily realize it. Fourth, the greatness of great misdeeds naturally ceasing is: As explained in the Lotus Sutra and the chapter on the Truthful One, if one does not understand that all the Buddha's teachings directly and indirectly show the means to attain enlightenment, and instead holds some as means to attain enlightenment and others as obstacles to attaining enlightenment, thereby dividing them into good and bad, reasonable and unreasonable, Mahayana and Hinayana, thinking that a Bodhisattva should study this and should not study that and abandoning it, one will become a rejecter of the Dharma. The karmic obscurations of rejecting the Dharma are extremely difficult to know and subtle, as stated in the Sutra of Total Collection. The faults of rejecting the Dharma are extremely great, as stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Whoever in this Jambudvipa destroys all the stupas, whoever abandons the sutras, this sin is especially अतिशय (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: अतिशय, Sanskrit Romanization: atiśaya, Chinese literal meaning: supreme). Whoever kills all the Arhats as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, whoever abandons the sutras, this sin is especially अतिशय (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: अतिशय, Sanskrit Romanization: atiśaya, Chinese literal meaning: supreme). So it is said. In general, there appear to be many doors for the arising of rejecting the Dharma, but this door shown earlier seems to be the greatest, therefore one should strive to abandon it. Moreover, earlier

Merely by gaining certainty as shown above, wrongdoing will naturally cease. This certainty should be sought from the chapter on the 'Truthful One' and by extensively reading the 'White Lotus of the Good Dharma'. Other ways of abandoning the Dharma should be learned from the 'Sutra of Condensed Elaboration'. The third part has three aspects: the manner of listening, the manner of teaching, and the manner of acting together at the end. The first part has three aspects: contemplating the benefits of hearing the Dharma, generating respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, and the actual manner of listening. The first aspect is: In the 'Collection of Hearers', it says: 'Through hearing, one knows the dharmas. Through hearing, one turns away from sin. Through hearing, one abandons what is meaningless. Through hearing, one attains nirvana.' These four lines explain that, relying on hearing, one knows the places of what to take and what to abandon in sequence, and having known, the discipline of turning away from wrongdoing, and then turning away from what is meaningless, how the samadhi of the mind abiding as it wishes on the virtuous object arises, and then with the learning of wisdom that realizes the selflessness of that, cutting the root that binds to samsara, one is said to attain liberation. In the 'Jataka' it also says: 'Whoever, through hearing, has their mind become faithful, will become well pleased and steadfast. Wisdom will arise and there will be no delusion. One's own share is also the kind to be acquired. Hearing is the lamp that dispels the darkness of delusion. It is the best of wealth that thieves and others cannot take. It is the weapon that destroys the enemy of all ignorance. It is the best of friends who show the means and instructions. It is the friend who does not change even when impoverished. It is the medicine for sorrow and disease that is without harm. It is the best of armies that destroys the great army of faults. It is also the best of fame, glory, and treasure. Meeting with virtuous ones is the best of births. In the assembly, one will please the wise.' And it says: 'Following hearing, making practice the essence, one will be easily liberated from the fortress of birth.' Etc., one should repeatedly contemplate these benefits of hearing and generate devotion from the depths of one's heart. The second aspect is: In the 'Earth-Essence Sutra', it says: 'Listen to the Dharma with one-pointed faith and reverence. Do not revile or slander it. To make offerings to the speaker of the Dharma, generate the perception of them as being like the Buddha.' Thus, regarding the speaker of the Dharma as being like the Buddha.
