Having seen, one should offer respect and wealth such as a lion throne, and abandon disrespect. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi it says: One should be free from arrogance and contempt for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, and should respect both. In the Jataka tales it also says: Sit on a very low seat, cultivate the splendor of taming, look with joyful eyes, like drinking the nectar of words. Generate respect and focus single-mindedly, with great joy and a pure mind. Just as a sick person listens to the doctor's words, listen to the Dharma with reverence and service. It is said like this. Third, there are two points: Abandoning the three faults of the vessel, and cultivating the six perceptions. The first point is: If the vessel is upside down, or if it is upright but unclean, or if it is clean but the bottom is broken, then even if the gods send rain, it will not enter, and even if it does, it will be contaminated by uncleanness, and the purpose of drinking etc. will not be achieved, and even if it is not contaminated by uncleanness, it will not stay inside but will leak out and go away. Similarly, even if one sits in the assembly where the Dharma is being taught, if one does not listen carefully, or if one listens but misunderstands, or if one's motivation is flawed, etc., or even if there are no such faults, but during the listening one does not firmly establish the words and meanings that one has grasped, but loses them due to forgetfulness etc., then hearing the Dharma will not become a great necessity. Therefore, one must be free from these faults. As an antidote to these three faults, the sutra says: Listen well and very well, and keep it in mind! These three words are spoken. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi it also says: To want to know everything, one must be single-minded, listen attentively, focus the mind, and listen with all one's heart and mind. The second point has six aspects: To regard oneself as a sick person, to regard the speaker of the Dharma as a doctor, to generate the perception of medicine for the teachings that follow, to generate the perception of nursing the sick for diligent practice, to regard the Tathagata as a noble person, and to generate the perception of the Dharma's principles abiding for a long time. The first point is: As it says in the Bodhicaryavatara: Even if it is an ordinary disease, one must act according to the doctor's words, what need is there to mention being constantly afflicted by diseases of a hundred faults such as desire etc.? Like this, for diseases that are chronic, difficult to cure, and cause intense suffering, and for afflictions such as desire, anger, and ignorance constantly.

Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that there. The Karmapa said: In reality, if one meditates like that, it will be reversed, and one will suffer from the serious illness of the three poisons, and the condition will be very serious, but we will not know that we are sick at all. Second, for example, when one suffers from serious illnesses such as wind and bile, one should seek out an experienced doctor. When one meets him, one will feel very happy. Listen to what he says, and serve him with respect. One should also seek out a spiritual friend who teaches the Dharma in the same way. Having found him, do not take him as a burden, but as an ornament, listen to his words, and serve him with respect. Third, just as a patient cherishes the medicine prescribed by the doctor, one should attach great importance to the instructions and subsequent teachings of the Dharma speaker. Cherish it through many efforts, and do not waste it through forgetting and so on. Fourth, just as a patient drinks the medicine prescribed by the doctor because he believes that he cannot cure the disease without drinking it, if a practitioner does not practice the teachings instructed by the Dharma speaker, he believes that he cannot destroy greed and so on, so he should strive to practice diligently. Do not just collect many names without practicing. Just as a leper with severed hands and feet is not helped by taking one or two doses of medicine, we have been afflicted with serious afflictive diseases since beginningless time, and it is not enough to practice the meaning of the teachings only once or twice. Therefore, one should analyze each part of the complete path with discriminating wisdom and strive like a river. As it is said in the "Confession Praise": There, the mind is always completely deluded, and for a long time it has been nourishing the disease, what is the use of taking medicine a few times for a leper with severed hands and feet? It is as it is said. Therefore, it is very important to have the perception of oneself as a patient, and if one has this perception, other perceptions will also arise. If it remains only in words, in order to eliminate afflictions, one will not practice the meaning of the teachings, but will only become a listener. Just as seeking a doctor but not drinking medicine, but only focusing on dispensing medicine, the patient cannot be liberated from the disease, as it is said in the "Samadhi King Sutra". Again, it says there: I am talking about the best
