This disciple's teacher had countless disciples in India, Kashmir, Oddiyana, Nepal, Tibet, and other places. The main ones in India were the great scholars Bito Pa, Dharma Akaramati, Uma Senge, and Sa'i Nyingpo, who were equal in wisdom to Jowo (Atiśa). Some say there were five, including a secret spiritual friend. From Ngari (present-day Ngari Prefecture) were the translator Rinchen Zangpo, the translator Naktsö, and Lha Lama Jangchub Ö. From Tsang were Gar Gewa and Gö Khukpa Lhatse. From Lhodrak (present-day Lhodrak County) were Chakpa Tri Chok and Gewa Kyong. From Kham were the great yogi, Gonpa Wa, Sherab Dorje, and Chakdar Tönpa. From Ü-Tsang came the three: Khu, Ngok, and Drom. Among them, the great lineage holder who expanded the Lama's activities was Dromtönpa Gyalwai Jungne, who was prophesied by Tara. These are brief descriptions of the author's greatness. Detailed information can be found in the great biographies. Secondly, the Dharma, the basis of this instruction, is the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. Although Jowo (Atiśa) composed many treatises, the Lamp is complete like a root. Because it summarizes and teaches the essence of both Sutra and Tantra, its subject matter is complete, and it mainly focuses on the stages of taming the mind, it is easy to practice. Moreover, it is adorned with the instructions of two Lamas who are skilled in the traditions of the two great chariots, so it is superior to other teachings. There are four qualities of the instructions in this text. The first is the quality of realizing that all teachings are not contradictory. All the teachings spoken by the Buddhas are understood here as the path to enlightenment for one person. Some are the main parts of the path, and some are the branches of the path, each being different. The intention of the Bodhisattvas is to accomplish the benefit of the world, and the beings to be tamed must also be accepted with three types of faculties, so it is necessary to study their paths. Because understanding the paths of the three vehicles is the method for accomplishing the intention of the Bodhisattvas, the venerable Maitreya said so. There are two types of Mahayana paths: common and uncommon. The first is what arises from the Hinayana Vinaya, which is the uncommon intention of seeking peace alone.
