and the associated karma. The second is: After directly realizing selflessness, even if one is born in samsara due to the power of karma and afflictions, one does not newly accumulate karma that propels rebirth. Therefore, those who accumulate karma that propels rebirth in samsara are all ordinary beings from the great Dharma summit of the Mahayana path of joining downwards. That is, if that basis (referring to ordinary beings) engages in non-virtuous actions such as killing through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, then non-meritorious karma is accumulated; if one engages in virtuous actions of the desire realm, such as giving and keeping precepts, then meritorious karma is accumulated; if one meditates on calm abiding and so forth, encompassed by the dhyanas and formless realms, then unwavering karma is accumulated. The third is divided into five parts: the causes of death, the mind at death, from where warmth is withdrawn, how the intermediate state is formed after death, and from there, how one takes birth in the state of becoming. First, dying from the exhaustion of lifespan means: all the lifespan propelled by previous karma is exhausted, the time arrives, and one dies. Dying from the exhaustion of merit means: like dying without resources. Dying without abandoning harsh behavior means: the causes of death, such as eating immoderately, as stated in the Nine Ways Sutra. Second, the two types of minds, virtuous minds such as faith and non-virtuous minds such as attachment: depending on oneself or others causing one to remember, they arise in the mind until the arising of coarse formations. Dying with an indeterminate mind means: neither oneself remembers the two types of virtuous and non-virtuous minds, nor do others cause one to remember. Among these, doing good is like going from darkness to light, and at the time of death, various pleasant appearances like dreams will appear, one dies peacefully, but the cutting of vital points is also extremely slight. Doing evil is like going from light to darkness, and at the time of death, various unpleasant appearances like dreams will appear, and intense feelings of suffering will arise, and the cutting of vital points is also extremely severe. The cutting of vital points exists in all birth places except for the realms of gods and hells. For those who are associated with an indeterminate mind, neither the previously mentioned happiness nor suffering will arise. At the time of death, whichever of the two types of minds, virtuous and non-virtuous, is more habitual, that one will manifest, and other minds will not follow; if the two are equally habitual, then whichever one is remembered first, that one will manifest.

One should not allow others to follow the transformation. When consciousness runs in subtle places, the minds of good and non-good will reverse and become neutral minds. All beings, at the time of death, before reaching the state of unclear consciousness, will develop attachment to the "I" that has been accustomed to for a long time. After that, due to attachment to the "I", thinking that the "I" is about to disappear, they will develop love for the body, which is the cause of the formation of the bardo. For the Stream-enterer and Once-returner, ego-clinging also arises, but they will examine it with wisdom and abandon it, not accepting it, just like a strong person hitting a weak person. For the Non-returner, that ego-clinging will not arise. Third, those who do non-virtuous deeds initially absorb heat from the upper body and then release it into the heart; those who do virtuous deeds initially absorb heat from the lower body and then release it into the heart, and consciousness is transferred from the heart. Initially, the consciousness that enters the center of semen and blood will become the heart, and finally, from whichever direction it is transferred, it will initially enter that direction. Fourth, as mentioned earlier, from the direction in which consciousness is transferred, without interruption, like the high and low of a balance, death and the bardo are formed. That bardo also possesses all the senses such as eyes, and has the body form of the beings of the place where it will be born. Before obtaining rebirth, the eyes are unobstructed like divine eyes, and the body is also unobstructed as if possessing magical powers. The bardo can see the bardo of the same kind, and the undefiled divine eye arising from meditation. If the bardo of any being is formed, then from then on it is impossible to prevent rebirth elsewhere, as stated in the Abhidharmakosha, but in the Compendium of Topics it is also said that it can be prevented. The bardo of those who do non-virtuous deeds is like a black cloak or seeing darkness in the dark night; the bardo of those who do virtuous deeds is like white linen or the scene of a night with moonlight. One can see the bardo of oneself and of the same kind, as well as that bardo and one's own birthplace. The bardo of hell is like a burning stump, the bardo of animals is like smoke, the bardo of pretas is like water, the bardo of desire realm gods and humans is like gold, and the bardo of the form realm is said to be white at the time of entering the womb. From the formless realm to the lower realm.
