There is no fault, because at that time, even if there is a desire for liberation, thinking of attaining the cessation of suffering, the truth of cessation, but since the cause of suffering is not recognized, and it is not seen that the cause can be prevented, one does not grasp liberation as something to be attained by thinking, 'I shall realize cessation.' Therefore, if one grasps liberation as 'I shall realize cessation,' one thinks, 'What is the path to go there?' and thus enters the truth of the path, so the truth of the path is spoken of last. Thus, the four truths are spoken of many times in all vehicles, great and small. The key points of entering into samsara and reversing from it are summarized by the Sugata, so it is extremely important for accomplishing liberation and is a great summary of the key points of practice, so students must be guided in that order. If, through contemplating the truth of suffering, there is no genuine renunciation of samsara, then the desire to attain liberation becomes mere words, and whatever one does becomes the cause of suffering. If, through contemplating the truth of the origin of suffering, one does not properly understand the afflictions as the root of samsara, it is like shooting an arrow without seeing the target. The key points of the path will be cut off, and grasping what is not the path to liberation from existence as the path, effort will become fruitless. And if one does not know what is to be abandoned, suffering and its origin, then one will not recognize the liberation that is the pacification of that, so the pursuit of liberation will also be mere arrogance. The second part has two parts: contemplating the general suffering of samsara, and contemplating individual sufferings. The first part has two parts: contemplating the eight sufferings, and contemplating the six sufferings. The first is: In all the trainings of the intermediate and common objects of focus, the common ones are those that were explained in the context of the Lesser Scope, which should also be adopted here, and for the uncommon objects of training, if one has the strength of mind, one should train as it is written. If the strength of mind is small, one should abandon the citations and train only in the essence of the meaning that is appropriate to the occasion. Although these are analytical meditations, one should not let the mind go to anything other than those objects of meditation, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, and one should prevent the mind from being distracted, etc. One should not let the mind be under the influence of drowsiness and dullness, but should meditate with alertness that is very clear and pure, in a focused manner. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: Recitations and asceticism, etc., even if practiced for a long time, if done with the mind distracted by other things, then by wisdom, it is meaningless.

Thus it is said. Because it is said that all virtuous deeds with a distracted mind have small results. Moreover, in the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle, it is also said: 'Son of good family, by these various methods, the faith of Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle, and whatever arises from the Great Vehicle, should all be known to arise from a non-distracted mind, truly contemplating and cultivating the meaning and the Dharma.' Therefore, it is said thus. Among them, a non-distracted mind is one that does not stray from the object of virtue to other places. Meaning and Dharma are meaning and words, and truly contemplating and cultivating is to observe and think with discriminating wisdom. This shows that both of these are necessary for accomplishing all qualities of Dharma. Therefore, to accomplish all the qualities of the three vehicles, it is necessary to have the single-pointedness of calm abiding itself, which does not stray from the object of virtue, or one similar to it; and the vipassanā itself, which distinguishes the suchness and the extent of the object of virtue by discriminating observation, or one similar to it, these two are necessary. As it is also said in the Explanation of the Profound Meaning: 'Maitreya, whether it is the good Dharma of the Hearers, or the Bodhisattvas, or the Tathagatas, all mundane or supramundane, should be known as the result of calm abiding and insight.' Thus it is said. If one does not accomplish the calm abiding and insight themselves and the two similar ones, then all the qualities of the three vehicles cannot be determined to be the result of the calm abiding and insight themselves. Here, when contemplating the first of the eight sufferings, the suffering of birth, there are five: Birth is suffering because it is connected with suffering: hell beings, and the completely suffering hungry ghosts, as well as womb-born beings, and egg-born beings, these four are born with many intense feelings of suffering at birth. Birth is a bad situation because it is connected with a bad situation: the seeds of the arising, abiding, and increasing of afflictions continue uninterrupted, so there is no capacity to be used for good deeds, and one cannot control them as one wishes. Birth is a place of suffering because it has become a place of suffering: relying on taking birth in the three realms, there will be aging and sickness.
