Sixth, hearing and holding the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. These are only those that actually appear in the Compendium of Trainings, but there are many others as well. Third, the power of turning away from misdeeds is to perfectly guard against the ten non-virtuous actions. This, by abandoning killing and so forth, destroys the karma and afflictions of the three doors, as well as the obstructions to Dharma caused by oneself, instructing others to do, and rejoicing in others' actions. As stated in the Essence of the Sun, it destroys all previous misdeeds. If one does not generate a mind of restraint from the depths of one's heart when confessing, then the confession becomes merely words. Therefore, the sutra says, "Will you not do it again in the future?" The Extensive Commentary explains this. Therefore, the resolve to not commit misdeeds in the future is very important, and the arising of this resolve depends on the first power. Fourth, the power of reliance is taking refuge and cultivating the mind of enlightenment. In general, the Buddha taught various methods for beginners to purify misdeeds, but the most complete antidote is to possess the four powers. The way misdeeds are purified is: the causes for being born in the lower realms and experiencing great suffering are transformed into causes for being born and experiencing minor suffering; or even if born in the lower realms, one does not experience its suffering; or in this present body, one can purify misdeeds and be liberated merely through minor illnesses such as a headache; similarly, the results that originally had to be experienced for a long time are transformed into being experienced for a short time, or not having to be experienced at all. This depends on the strength of the purifier, whether the four powers are complete, the strength of the force, the length of time, and so on, so there is no absolute certainty. The Sutra Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka say, "Actions are not lost even in hundreds of eons." This refers to situations where one does not cultivate the antidote of the four powers. If one purifies misdeeds through the antidote of the four powers as explained above, then even results that are certain to be experienced can be purified, as stated in the Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. Like this, through confession and restraint, etc., the ability of karma to produce its ripened result is diminished, and even if other conditions are met, it will not produce its ripened result. Similarly, it is the same for destroying roots of virtue through wrong views and anger. The Blazing Reasoning explains this. Although one can completely purify misdeeds through confession and restraint, there is a great difference between the purity of being unblemished by misdeeds from the beginning and the purity obtained after confession. For example, the Bodhisattva Grounds states that it is like a tree whose roots have rotted and a tree whose roots have not rotted.

It is said that even if one can remedy the situation after taking the Bodhisattva vows when they first arise, it is impossible to attain the first ground in that lifetime. Moreover, the Sutra Compendium of All Phenomena also states that if one commits the sin of abandoning the Dharma as described in that sutra, even if one confesses three times a day for seven years, the sin can be eliminated. However, no matter how fast, it takes ten kalpas to attain patience. Therefore, the meaning of complete purification is that the complete purification is when undesirable results are no longer produced. However, the arising of realizations on the path and so on is very distant, so one should strive not to be contaminated from the beginning. Therefore, the noble ones also say that even for the sake of life, they would not knowingly commit even the slightest sin. If there is no difference between purification through confession and not having committed it in the first place, then there is no need to do so. In the world, too, although injuries to limbs and so on can be remedied, it is not the same as not having been injured in the first place. The second point is that the pursuit of this life was not artificial before, but the pursuit of the next life was only a verbal understanding. If this position is shifted, and the pursuit of the next life becomes the main one, and this life becomes only incidental, then it has arisen. However, it must be stabilized, so even if it has arisen, one must strive to practice. The third point is that the scriptures say that one must turn away from all the perfections of samsara. Some people therefore misunderstand that the perfect higher realms of body and enjoyment are samsara, so one should not pursue them. But in reality, there are two kinds of things to be pursued: temporary and ultimate. The perfections of the body and so on in samsara must be pursued temporarily even by those who seek liberation, because it is through this basis that one must gradually attain definitive goodness in the end. Not all of the higher realms of body, enjoyment, and retinue are included in samsara, because the ultimate perfection of the body and so on is the Form Body, as well as the wealth of its pure land, and its retinue. With this in mind, the Ornament of the Sutras says that the first four perfections accomplish the creation of body, enjoyment, and retinue, the perfect higher realms.
