It is said in many scriptures that these are for accomplishing the Rupakaya. The mind training for the stages of the path common to the Lesser Person is finished. Thus, by remembering death and contemplating the manner of falling into the lower realms after death, turning away from this world and generating the desire to seek happiness in future lives, through the common refuge and the certainty of the results of black and white actions, abandon evil deeds and strive to perform virtuous deeds. Although one can attain the state of a good rebirth by striving to perform virtuous deeds, here we do not consider that sufficient. Having generated the thought common to the Lesser Person, and having generated the thought common to the Intermediate Person of turning away from all of samsara, and relying on that, generating the mind of enlightenment and leading to the Great Person, therefore, it is necessary to train the mind of the Intermediate Person. Like this, even if one attains the state of gods and humans, one has not transcended the suffering of conditioned existence, so naturally considering it to be happiness is a perversion, and in reality there is no happiness, and one will certainly fall into the lower realms again, because it is a bad end. Therefore, there are four points to training the mind in the stages of the path common to the Intermediate Person: actually training the mind, the measure of its arising, eliminating wrong ideas about it, and determining the nature of the path to liberation. The first point has two parts: identifying the mind that seeks liberation, and the method of generating it. The first point is: liberation is freedom from bondage, and karma and afflictions are the two factors that bind one to samsara. Due to the power of these two, in terms of realms, there are the three realms of the desire realm, etc.; in terms of destinies, there are the five or six destinies of gods, etc.; in terms of birth places, there are the four types of birth such as womb-born, etc. The union of aggregates is the nature of bondage, so liberation from that is liberation. Wanting to attain that is the mind that seeks liberation. The second point is: for example, just as the desire to stop the suffering of thirst arises from seeing the suffering of thirst as undesirable, so too, the desire to attain liberation, which is the pacification of the suffering of the aggregates of appropriation, also depends on seeing the faults of the aggregates of appropriation as being of the nature of suffering. Therefore, if one does not generate the mind of wanting to abandon existence after contemplating its faults, then one will not want to attain the pacification of that suffering.

It will not be in vain, as the Four Hundred says: "For whom there is no weariness here, where does that person have peace?" Therefore, in this regard, there are two: contemplating the faults of suffering, the truth of cyclic existence, and contemplating the order of engagement in cyclic existence, the truth of origin. The first has two parts: showing the intention of the suffering truth being taught first among the four truths, and actually meditating on suffering. The first is: Origin is the cause, and suffering is the result, so origin is earlier and suffering is later. Why did the Blessed One not say in that order: "Monks, this is the noble truth of suffering, this is the noble truth of origin?" To this, the Teacher reversed the order of cause and effect in his teaching, which has a great point of practice, so there is no fault. What is it? Like this, if the disciple himself does not first generate an undeluded desire to be liberated from cyclic existence, how can he be led to liberation since the root is cut off? Therefore, first the disciple is obscured by the darkness of ignorance and deceived by the perversion of holding the perfections of cyclic existence as happiness. The Four Hundred says: "This ocean of suffering has no end in any way. Child, you are drowning in this, why don't you feel fear?" As it says, this is not true happiness, but suffering. Having taught many aspects of suffering, it is necessary to generate weariness, so the truth of suffering is taught first. Then, seeing oneself drowning in the ocean of suffering and wanting to be liberated from it, one sees that suffering must be reversed. And knowing that it will not be reversed if the cause is not reversed, one wonders what its cause is, and thus comes to know the truth of origin. Therefore, the truth of origin is taught after that. Then, the knowledge arises that the suffering of cyclic existence is contaminated karma, and that karma is produced by afflictions, and that the root of that is the truth of origin, which is the clinging to self. And when it is seen that the clinging to self can also be reversed, one makes a vow to realize the cessation of suffering, the truth of cessation, and therefore the truth of cessation is taught after that. So, when the truth of suffering is taught, the desire for liberation arises, so it would be reasonable to teach the truth of cessation after the truth of suffering, wouldn't it?
