As it is said. Because the power of white deeds is small and the power of black deeds is very strong, contemplating the manner of falling into the lower realms, one fears the lower realms and believes that the Three Jewels have the power to protect from them, these two are (the cause of refuge). Therefore, if these two are just words, then taking refuge is also similar to that. If these two are strong and stable, then taking refuge will also be convincing, so one should strive for these two causes. The second has two aspects: identifying the object, and the reason why it is worthy of refuge. First, from the "Hundred and Fifty Praises": "For whom, all faults, Never ever exist; In whom, in all ways, All virtues abide. If there is a mind, Then take refuge in that one; Praise that one, respect that one, Abide in the teachings of that one." As it is said, if one has the wisdom to distinguish between refuge and non-refuge, then it is reasonable to take refuge in the infallible refuge, the Buddha Bhagavan. This also represents the Dharma and Sangha Three Jewels, as the "Seventy Verses on Refuge" says: "Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, Are the refuge of those who desire liberation." Second, one who is liberated from all fears, skilled in methods to liberate others from fears, has great compassion for all beings, engages in benefiting all beings without partiality, and accomplishes the benefit of all beings whether or not they have bestowed favors, such an object is worthy of refuge. And this is only possessed by the Buddha, not by Ishvara and others, therefore only the Buddha is the refuge. Therefore, the Dharma taught by the Buddha and the Sangha of Hearers are also worthy of refuge. Therefore, if one can gain certainty from these reasons stated in the "Collected Topics" and other texts, and can place hope with a single-pointed mind, then there is no reason not to be protected, so one should generate certainty from the depths of one's heart. Because for protecting oneself, the external causes are already complete, but the internal cause, that is, not having placed hope in the refuge and relied on it, is why one suffers. The third aspect has four: knowing the qualities, knowing the distinctions, vowing, and becoming a refuge taker by not changing one's words. First, it is necessary to remember the qualities of refuge, therefore it is divided into three: the qualities of the Buddha, the qualities of the Dharma, and the qualities of the Sangha. The first aspect has four: the qualities of the body, the qualities of speech, the qualities of the mind.

Virtues. These are the virtues of activity. The first is to remember the names and marks of the Buddha, as it says in the example of praise: Your body is adorned with names, beautiful as nectar for the eyes, like the cloudless autumn sky, adorned with a multitude of stars. The Sage, with a golden body, covered in Dharma robes, appears majestic, like the peak of a golden mountain, encircled by clouds of the rainbow. Protector, even without ornaments, the radiance of your face is full, like the full moon, which is unmatched even without clouds. Your lotus-like face, and the lotus that blooms in the sun, if a bee sees them, it will hesitate and be caught in doubt as to which is the lotus. On your golden face, white teeth appear beautiful, like in the midst of a golden mountain, the immaculate moonlight of autumn descends. Your right hand, worthy of offerings, is adorned with the mark of the wheel, giving comfort with your hand to those who fear samsara. Sage, when you walk, your two feet are like auspicious lotuses, drawn on this earth, how beautiful are those with lotuses. Thus, one should remember. The second is, that all beings in the world, simultaneously ask their own different questions, grasping them with the wisdom of a single moment of mind, answering all the questions with one voice, and they all understand in their own languages, contemplating this extremely wondrous way. In the chapter of the Truthful One, it says: Thus, all beings with definite words, many ask at once, understanding in a single moment of mind, answering each separately with one voice. Therefore, the guide in the world, know that he proclaims the voice of Brahma, which brings an end to the suffering of gods and humans, turning the excellent wheel of Dharma. Thus, one should contemplate. The third has two, the virtue of wisdom, and the virtue of compassion. The first is, regarding all knowable things, both as they are and as many as they are, knowing them as clearly as an amalaka fruit in the palm of one's hand, engaging without obstruction, therefore able to
