Looking upwards, the limbs and twigs of those (beings) fall off. There is a bird called the iron-beaked crow, which sits on the shoulder or head (of the sufferer) and pecks out the eyeballs and eats them. Those (scenes) are like the harm of weapons, and should be regarded as one. The fourth is that in the place where the silk-cotton tree and birds dwell, there is a place called the 'River of No Measure,' which is filled with boiling molten water. Beings seeking a place to dwell fall into it, go up and down, and are boiled, just as beans and the like are put into a copper pot filled with water, with a great fire lit beneath it. On both banks of that river sit those who hold sticks, slings, and nets in their hands, and they do not allow (the beings) to come out. They use slings or nets to pull (the beings) out, lay them face up on the burning great earth, and ask them what they want. Those (beings) say: 'I know nothing, I see nothing, but I am hungry, I am thirsty.' Then they insert a burning iron hammer into (the beings') mouths, and pour boiling copper water into (the beings') mouths. Near and short-lived, on the basis of the earth, the lifespan is uncertain. However, while experiencing those sufferings, as long as the power of karma is not exhausted, suffering will continue to be experienced. The third is that each of the eight great hot hells for beings is located tens of thousands of yojanas away. Thirty-two thousand yojanas below here is the Blister Hell, and from there, every two thousand yojanas, there are seven other (hells). Of those eight hells, the Blister Hell is: being struck by a great wind, the whole body swells up as if blisters have formed. The Bursting Blister Hell is: swelling up as if blisters are bursting. Sothamtampa, Kyihud, and Achu, these names are named according to the way they are pronounced. Splitting like an উৎপལ་ (Tibetan,उत्पल, utpala, Blue Lotus) is: being struck by a great wind, the color turns blue, and it splits into five or six petals. Splitting like a lotus is: the color changes from blue to red, and it splits into ten petals or more. Splitting like a great lotus is: the skin becomes very red, and it splits into a hundred petals or even more. These are described on the basis of the earth. The lifespan is: filling a Magadha eighty-khari sesame seed container to the brim with sesame seeds, and then taking out one sesame seed every hundred years, until all the sesame seeds are taken out, the lifespan of the Blister Hell is longer than that.

And, the lifespans of those below are said to be twenty times longer than those before. The neighboring hells are: they are located near the hot and cold hells, and according to the root text of the Fifty Verses on the Guru, they also exist in the human realm. Furthermore, the scriptures say that they are near the edge of the great ocean, as described in the Story of the Well-Guarded Monk. Therefore, the causes for being born in these places are very easy to occur, as will be explained later, so many are accumulated each day. Even if much has been accumulated before, there are still countless evil deeds now, so one should not remain at ease, but should contemplate these and be afraid. Because between them, there is nothing but this breath. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Having done the deeds of hell, why do you remain so comfortable? And as it says in the Letter to a Friend: The interval between the breaths of a sinner is filled with the immeasurable suffering of hell. Hearing this, who would not be afraid, unless they have the nature of a vajra? Seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, and making images of hells also cause fear, so what need is there to mention those who experience the unbearable ripening of karma? And so on. The intense suffering is also described in the Letter to a Friend: Among all pleasures, the pleasure of extinguishing desire is the master of bliss. Likewise, among all sufferings, the suffering of Avici hell is the most unbearable. Here, the suffering of being stabbed three hundred times a day with short spears is such that one cannot even bear a small part of the suffering of hell, let alone endure it. And so on. One should understand that the cause of generating such suffering is solely one's own misdeeds. Therefore, one should strive with all one's might not to be stained by even the smallest misdeed. As it says in that very text: The seeds of these non-virtuous results are the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. Strive with all your might to ensure that not even a speck of them remains. Thus, you should exert yourself. Secondly, animals kill the smaller ones because they are powerful, and they become tools for gods and humans. Because they have no autonomy and are completely subject to others, they are killed, beaten, and harmed. Since they live together with gods and humans, the Fifty Verses on the Guru says that they have no other dwelling place.
