The root of their dwelling place is the great ocean, and the others are said in the Abhidharmakosha commentary to have branched out from that. Furthermore, one should contemplate with sadness and disillusionment the ways in which beings born in darkness and water grow old and die in those places, and the ways in which they suffer from the burden of heavy loads, plowing, shearing, chasing, and being tormented and killed in many different ways. They are tormented by hunger and thirst, sun and wind, and harassed in many ways by hunters and others. They are always afraid of those things. The Abhidharmakosha says, "Animals, the best are long-lived for a kalpa." This means that those with long lives can live for about a kalpa, and those with short lives are uncertain. The third is that those who are very stingy are born as pretas. Those pretas are also afflicted with hunger and thirst. Their skin and flesh are dried up like burnt stumps. Their faces are covered with hair. Their mouths are very dry and they lick them with their tongues. There are three types of these: those who have external obscurations to food and drink, those who have internal obscurations to food and drink, and those who have obscurations to food and drink themselves. The first is that when they wander in springs, lakes, and ponds, they are prevented from doing so by beings who hold swords, spears, and short spears, and they see the water as pus and blood and do not want to drink it. The second is that their mouths are only the size of the eye of a needle, their mouths are burning, they have goiters, and their stomachs are large. Even if they find food and drink without being obstructed by others, they cannot eat or drink it. The third is that those called "flame garlands" burn everything they eat and drink into flames, and those called "excrement eaters" eat and drink feces and urine, and only eat and drink things that are unclean, smelly, harmful, and blameworthy. Some cut and eat their own flesh, and cannot enjoy clean and good food and drink. The place is five hundred yojanas below the city of the king (Rajagriha) in Jambudvipa (Southern Jambudvipa). The others are said in the Abhidharmakosha commentary to have branched out from that. The lifespan is, according to the Sutra of the Earth Store and the Abhidharmakosha, one month of humans is one day for pretas, and they can live for five hundred years. In the Letter to a Friend it says, "Continuously experiencing suffering, the noose of bad karma is very strong, binding the body."

Some pretas live for five thousand years, and some even live for ten thousand years. As it is said, some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, and some have ten thousand years. The size of the bodies of beings in the three lower realms is not fixed; according to the influence of unwholesome karma, the bodies are large or small, as stated in the *Fifty Verses on the Guru*. Therefore, when we think of the suffering of the lower realms, even putting our hand in a fire all day now, or standing naked on ice in the cold winter, or not eating or drinking for a few days, or being bitten by mosquitoes, etc., on the body is difficult to endure. How much more so the suffering of the hot hells, the cold hells, the pretas, and the animals devouring each other alive—how shall I endure it? Therefore, we should contemplate according to our present experience until a change of mind arises with extreme fear and dread. Now that we have a precious human rebirth, we should think in this way, thereby purifying past accumulations and reducing the possibility of falling into the lower realms in the future, and transforming and increasing past merit through strong aspirations, and entering many new doors of virtuous action. In this way, each day can be made meaningful. If we do not think in this way now, then when we fall into the lower realms, we will not find a refuge to protect us from those fears, even if we seek one. At that time, we will not have the mental capacity to distinguish between what should be done and what should not be done. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*. The second part is divided into two points: training in refuge, which is the sacred door to entering the teachings; and generating faith, which is the root of all happiness and well-being. The first part is divided into four points: what to rely on as the cause of refuge; what to rely on as the object of refuge; in what way to take refuge; and the order of what to learn after taking refuge. The first point is: although there are many causes of refuge in general, here, as mentioned before, we will not live in this life forever, death comes quickly, and after death we have no autonomy over where we will be reborn, being completely under the control of karma. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Just as in the darkness of a cloudy night, a flash of lightning briefly illuminates, so too, through the power of the Buddha, in the hundred paths, worldly merit and wisdom occasionally arise. Therefore, virtuous actions are extremely weak, and evil is powerful and unbearable.'
