It is certain that death will come within a hundred years, and before that, it is uncertain which day it will come. Like today, it is impossible to determine whether one will die or not. However, one must think of death in one's mind and generate the thought that one will die today. If one thinks in one's mind that one will not die today and keeps preparing for this life, one will not prepare for the next life. In the meantime, the Lord of Death will seize you, and you will have to die with sorrow. If you prepare for death every day, you will accomplish many benefits for the next life, and even if you do not die, it is good to do so. If you die, then it is even more necessary to do so. There are three points to this: thinking that the lifespan of Jambudvipa (Earth) is uncertain, so one does not know when one will die; thinking that the causes of death are very many, while the causes of life are few; thinking that the body is very fragile, so one does not know when one will die. The first point is: generally speaking, the lifespan of those with unpleasant voices is certain. Although others are not certain to reach their respective lifespans, most are certain. The people of Jambudvipa (Earth) are very uncertain. In the beginning, there were those who lived for countless years, but now one must take ten years as the limit of longevity, and even now it is not apparent who among the old, young, and middle-aged will die. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'Here it is uncertain, the final is ten years, the first is countless years.' One should remember those such as one's lama or friends who did not live to the end of their lifespan and suddenly died due to internal and external causes of death, and repeatedly think that one is also of such a nature. The second point is: this life has many harms from sentient and non-sentient beings. For example, harm from humans and non-human ghost classes, and various harms to the body and life from animal classes. Similarly, one should carefully consider the harms caused by internal diseases and external elements. Furthermore, one's body must be composed of the four elements, and these elements also harm each other. If the boundaries of the elements are unbalanced, increasing or decreasing, it will cause disease and take life. These are innate, so the body and life seem stable, but one cannot trust them. As it says in the Great Liberation Sutra: 'The concept of death is that this life is always surrounded by many hateful enemies, decaying every moment, and nothing is increasing.' It also says in the Precious Garland: 'Death'

Like being in the midst of one's own karmic conditions, like a lamp in a red wind. (The above quote) Furthermore, living itself is a process of moving towards death. Although there are many conditions for survival, one should not trust them. As it says in the "Garland of Jewels": "The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. These causes of life are also the aids to death, therefore one should always accumulate Dharma." So it is said. The third point is that the body is as fragile as a bubble, and it does not take much harm. Even something as small as a thorn can become an excuse to take life. Therefore, it is also very easy to be destroyed by all the causes of death. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "The earth, Mount Sumeru, the ocean, the seven suns, being burned to ashes, these sentient beings, not even ashes will remain, let alone the extremely fragile human? Needless to say." So it is said. After thinking like this, it is uncertain when the Lord of Death will destroy the body and life. Do not waste time, but resolve to practice the Dharma now, and make many vows. As Shri Jagata Mitra said: "Like the body borrowed by the Lord of the Earth, without sickness or decay, existing in happiness, in that life, extract the essence, to avoid the fear of disease, old age, and decay. When old age and so on come, even if you remember, what can you do then?" So it is said. Among the three roots, the most important is to think about the impermanence of death, so one must strive. The third is, seeing that one must go to the next world, at that time, although relatives or friends are very loving and sad, surrounding you, none can be taken away. Even if there are many pleasing riches, not even a speck of dust can be taken away. Even the flesh and blood born together must be abandoned, let alone others? Therefore, all the perfections of this life will abandon me, and I will certainly abandon these and go to another world. One should always think like this, as if it were happening today. Do not be bound by relatives, body, and enjoyment, etc., but resolve to practice the Dharma. Therefore, even if one has obtained the rare and precious human body, it is the basis of the path, so one must strive. As Potowa said: "Our method of dispelling phenomena is to practice impermanence, dispelling all the phenomena of this life such as relatives and utensils, alone, without companions, going to the next life."
