If a genuine wisdom arises, for example, if it is certain that one will die today or tomorrow, then for those who have even a slight understanding of Dharma, they will see no point in associating with relatives and friends, and thus cut off their attachment to them. Just as one naturally wants to acquire the essence through giving and other means. Seeing all the efforts made for worldly things like gain and honor as meaningless, one stops evil deeds and accumulates good deeds such as taking refuge and keeping vows. In this way, one can elevate oneself to a sacred position and lead beings there as well. What could be more important than that? Therefore, many examples praise it. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra says, "Among all plowing, autumn plowing is the best. Among all footprints, the footprint of an ox is the best. Among all perceptions, the perception of impermanence and death is the best. Because these can eliminate the desires of the three realms, ignorance, and all arrogance." Similarly, it is praised as a hammer that instantly destroys all afflictions and evil deeds, and as a door that instantly accomplishes all good deeds, and so on. In short, the time to accomplish the meaning of life is when one obtains this special human body. Most of us dwell in the lower realms, and even if we occasionally come to the higher realms, we are mostly in a state of no leisure, so we cannot find the opportunity to practice Dharma there. Even if we obtain a leisure and endowment body that is sufficient for practice, we do not practice Dharma properly, because we always think that we will not die yet. Therefore, clinging to the idea that one will not die from the bottom of one's heart is the gateway to all decline, and remembering death is the gateway to all perfection. Therefore, for those who have no other profound Dharma to practice, this is like practice. Even if it is something to be practiced, do not think that you can just practice it a little at first, and that you should not practice it regularly. But from beginning to end, from the bottom of your heart, be sure of its necessity and practice it. Third, fearing separation from relatives and friends is because you are afraid of death because you are not familiar with the path, so this is not the place to cultivate that fear. So, what should we do? Because all the bodies obtained under the control of karma and afflictions cannot escape death, so even if you develop fear of death, you should not stop it for a while.

In short, although one should not be afraid of death, one should fear death for preventing the cause of falling into bad destinies and for not accomplishing the cause of higher rebirth and definite goodness. Because if you think that fearing death can accomplish these, then you will not be afraid at the time of death. If you do not accomplish these, you will not be able to escape from samsara in general, and in particular, you will fall into bad destinies, so fearing death, you will suffer from regret at the time of death. Fourth, one should meditate through the three roots, nine reasons, and three decisions. Among them, there are three: thinking about the certainty of death, thinking about the uncertainty of when death will occur, and thinking that at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma will be of any help. The first point has three: thinking that the Lord of Death will definitely come and that it cannot be prevented by any circumstances; thinking that life will not increase and that the process of decreasing life is continuous; thinking that even when alive, there is no time to practice the Dharma, and death is certain. The first point is that no matter what kind of body is taken, no matter where one lives, one will be destroyed by death at any time, as stated in the Compendium. Moreover, even if one wants to escape, one cannot prevent the arrival of death by running fast, strength, wealth, objects, mantras, and medicine, as stated in the Advice to the King. Karma pa said, "Now we need to be afraid of death, so that we will not panic at the time of death. We are just the opposite, not afraid now, but scratching our chests with our fingernails at the time of death." The second point is that, as stated in the Sutra of Entering the Womb, the lifespan of being able to live to a hundred years seems to be the limit of lifespan. Even if one can live to a hundred years, during that time, years, months, months, days, days, day and night are passing and being exhausted. Moreover, morning, etc., are also passing and being exhausted, so the total amount of lifespan seems to be constantly decreasing, and there is no increase, and the process of decreasing is continuous. As stated in the Bodhicaryavatara: "Day and night do not stop, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is nothing else to add, how can my body not die?". In this regard, one can think through various metaphors, such as a weaver weaving cloth, a slaughtered animal going to the slaughterhouse step by step, a shepherd driving livestock back to their residence involuntarily, and so on. Moreover, the Great Adornment Sutra also says: "The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance, the lifespan of beings is like lightning in the sky, steep
