The measure of arising. That is to eliminate wrong conceptions. The first has two parts: generating the mind of seeking the next life, and relying on the means of happiness in the next life. The first has two parts: contemplating the impermanence of this world by remembering death, and contemplating the happiness and suffering of the two realms in how the next life will transform. The first has four parts: the faults of not meditating on the remembrance of death, the benefits of meditating, what kind of mind of remembrance of death to generate, and the manner of meditating on the remembrance of death. The first is: Although everyone has the thought that eventually death will come, day after day they think, 'I won't die today, I won't die today either.' The mind clings to the side of not dying, even until the moment of death. If one does not apply the antidote and does not keep it in mind, being obscured by such a mind, the thought of staying in this life arises, thinking, 'This and that are needed.' One strives only for the happiness of this life and thinks only of eliminating suffering. Therefore, the mind that contemplates the great meanings such as the next life, liberation, and omniscience does not arise, so one is not allowed to enter the Dharma. Even if one in a hundred enters into listening, thinking, and meditating, it is only for the sake of this life. Whatever virtue is done has little power, and it is often associated with misdeeds and downfalls, so it is rare that it is not mixed with the cause of bad migrations. Even if one practices with the next world as the goal, one cannot prevent the laziness of procrastination, thinking, 'I will practice later.' Time is wasted by sleepiness, drowsiness, idle talk, food, and other distractions, so one cannot practice properly with great diligence. Not only that, but by indulging in the prosperity of this life, the afflictions and the misdeeds they cause increase, turning one's back on the nectar of the Dharma and leading one to bad migrations. What could be worse than that? The Four Hundred Verses also says: 'For whom the three realms have sovereignty, but he himself has no lord of death, if he still sleeps soundly like that, what other thing is worse than this?' The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life also says: 'Everything must be abandoned, one must go alone. I did not know this, therefore for friends and enemies, I committed various sins.' Thus it is proclaimed. The second is: Remembering death
