If we summarize the benefits of what has been said, there are two: temporary and ultimate benefits. The first also has two aspects: not falling into the lower realms and being born in the higher realms. If that mind arises, the causes of the lower realms previously accumulated are purified, and the accumulation of future causes is cut off. The causes of the higher realms previously accumulated are seized by it and greatly increase, and all new actions are motivated by it, so there is no end to them. The ultimate goals of liberation and omniscience are also easily achieved by relying on that mind. However, if there is no genuine desire for the temporary and ultimate benefits, then those benefits arise from generating the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, although we say that we should strive to generate that mind, it is just words if we examine our own minds, which is very clear. Therefore, to generate the desire to attain the two benefits of higher rebirth and definite goodness, we must cultivate the thoughts common to the small and medium persons. After generating the desire to attain these two benefits, when meditating on the beneficial mind, we must generate the root of that mind, which is love and compassion. If we think about how we ourselves are lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering, wandering in samsara, and yet not even a hair on our body moves, then there is no way that we can feel unbearable when other sentient beings are lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering. As it says in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "These sentient beings, even for their own sake, have never had such a mind, even in their dreams. How could they generate it for the sake of others?" Therefore, in the stage of the small person, we should think about how we ourselves will suffer the harm of the suffering of the lower realms. In the stage of the medium person, we should think about how even in the higher realms there is suffering and no peace. Then, we should meditate on those sentient beings who have become our friends, comparing them to our own experiences. This will become the cause of generating love and compassion, and from that, the mind of enlightenment will arise. Therefore, cultivating the thoughts common to the small and medium persons is the means of generating a genuine mind of enlightenment. Similarly, in those two stages, striving in various ways to accumulate merit and purify obscurations through refuge, contemplating karma and its effects, etc., is the preliminary practice for the mind of enlightenment, the means of training the mind. The seven-limbed practice, including refuge, etc., should be performed as appropriate.

Therefore, those should also be understood as methods for generating the mind. Here, the methods by which the small and medium Dharma categories become limbs for generating Bodhicitta should be explained by the lama, and the disciple should also gain certainty about them. It is extremely important to practice diligently by remembering those in turn. If you do not do that, the path of the great person and the various paths will become unrelated, and before reaching the actual path of the great person, since you do not gain certainty about Bodhicitta, it will become an obstacle to generating the mind, or in the meantime, you will degenerate from great meaning, so you must strive for this. After practicing in that way, you must generate genuine Bodhicitta in your mindstream. After that, in order to stabilize that mind, first take uncommon refuge, and then perform the ritual of aspiration. After being upheld by the ritual of aspiration, practice its precepts. After that, study extensively the desire to learn the six perfections of conduct and the four ways of gathering disciples, etc., and when the desire to learn arises from the bottom of your heart, take pure entering vows. After that, pledge your life not to be stained by root downfalls. Also strive not to be stained by small and medium transgressions and misdeeds, and if you are stained, purify them well according to the methods of confession that have been taught. After that, practice the six perfections in general, and in particular, in order to be able to use the mind as you wish on virtuous objects, practice the nature of calm abiding—meditation. The saying in the Lamp for the Path that calm abiding is practiced in order to generate clairvoyance is only an example, for Jowo himself has also said on other occasions that it is also practiced in order to generate insight. Therefore, calm abiding is also practiced for that purpose. After that, in order to cut the bonds of grasping at the two selves, the meaning of emptiness should be determined by view, and the method of meditation should be cultivated without error, and thus the nature of wisdom—insight—should be cultivated. In that way, learning the precepts below entering vows other than practicing calm and insight is the training in ethics, calm abiding is the training in mind, and insight is the training in wisdom, as stated in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path. Furthermore, everything below calm abiding is the means and the accumulation of merit, and the path based on relative truth.
