This is to make (them) as what is to be obtained, because one studies the six perfections and the two stages, etc. The Lamp for the Path says, "Whoever wishes to completely extinguish all the sufferings of others with the suffering belonging to his own continuum, that person is the best." It is said that way. Because that person, in order to achieve enlightenment, will speak below about both the Paramita and Mantra methods. The terminology of the three types of individuals is mentioned in many places such as the Compendium of Determinations and the Commentary on the Treasury. Small individuals have two types: those who focus on this life and those who focus on the next life. This is the second type, which is to take up engaging in the non-mistaken means of higher rebirth. The second (part) has two: what is the meaning of leading through the gateway of the path of the three types of individuals; and what is the reason for leading in that order. The first (part) is: although the three types of individuals are spoken of in this way, the path of the great individual also includes the paths of the other two, so the teacher Ashvaghosa said that those two are limbs of the Mahayana path. Therefore, here, it is not leading to the path of the small individual who makes only the happiness of samsara as what is to be obtained, nor is it leading to the path of the intermediate individual who makes liberation from samsara as what is to be obtained for his own benefit, but rather some of the paths common to those two are made as a preliminary to leading to the path of the great individual, thereby making them limbs for training in the path of the great individual. The second (part) has two: the actual reason and the necessity. The first (part) is: the gateway to entering the Mahayana is precisely the generation of the supreme Bodhicitta. If that (Bodhicitta) arises in the continuum, as it says in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, "The moment the thought of enlightenment arises, the miserable ones imprisoned in the prison of samsara are called the sons of the Sugatas." It is said that way, one obtains the name of Bodhisattva, and that basis enters the Mahayana. If that (Bodhicitta) declines, one will exit from the midst of the Mahayana assembly. Therefore, those who wish to enter the Mahayana must strive to generate that (Bodhicitta) from many gateways. In order to generate that (Bodhicitta), one needs to first meditate on the benefits of generating that (Bodhicitta), thereby increasing joy in the benefits, and one needs the seven-limbed practice including refuge, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings and Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior.
