How to take the essence. The first has three parts: first, recognizing leisure and endowment; second, contemplating its great meaning; and third, contemplating its difficulty to obtain. The first has two parts: first, leisure; and second, endowment. The first is: From the "Collection": "Through discipline, the nature of many animal migrations is subdued, and by abandoning the eight unfree states, leisure is always obtained." As it is said, being free from the eight unfree states is leisure. The eight unfree states are: remote border areas where the four assemblies do not travel; those with incomplete faculties, such as the foolish, mute, and those with incomplete limbs and ears; those with wrong views who hold that there are no past and future lives, no karma and its results, and no Three Jewels; and the absence of the Buddha's teachings where Buddhas do not appear. These four are the unfree states of humans. The three lower realms and the long-lived gods are the unfree states of non-humans. The long-lived gods are explained in the commentary on the "Letter to a Friend" as referring to the unconscious beings and the formless realm. The former exists in one direction of the fourth dhyana, where the fruit is great, like a monastery in a village. The latter is a common being born in the formless realm. In the story of the eight unfree states, the desire gods who are always distracted by the activities of desire are called long-lived gods. The second has two parts, the five personal endowments: "Human birth, born in the central land, complete faculties, not turned to sinful actions, faith in the source." This is it. Among them, being born in the central land means being born in a place where the four assemblies travel. Complete faculties mean not being foolish or mute, and having complete limbs, small limbs, eyes, ears, etc. Not turned to sinful actions means not having committed or caused to commit the five heinous crimes. Faith in the source means having faith in the Vinaya, the source of all white dharmas that arise in the world and beyond. Here, Vinaya should be understood as referring to all three pitakas. These five are included in one's own continuum and are conditions for practicing Dharma, so they are called personal endowments. The five external endowments are: "Buddha's appearance and the teaching of the sacred Dharma, the existence of the teachings and following them, and having love in one's heart for others." This is it. Among them, Buddha's appearance or arising means attaining complete enlightenment after accumulating merit for three countless eons. Teaching the sacred Dharma means the Buddha or his shravakas teaching the Dharma. The existence of the teachings means from the time the Buddha attained Buddhahood and taught the Dharma, until

Until negative karma is exhausted, the Dharma will not decline if practiced in a way that manifests the ultimate Dharma. To follow the abiding of the Dharma means to recognize that the realization of the Dharma itself has the power to enable beings to directly see the true Dharma, and thus to teach the truth as it has been realized. Others helping with compassion means that donors and patrons give Dharma robes and so on. These five belong to other conditions, which are auxiliary conditions for practicing the Dharma, so they are called other conditions. Second, if one does not practice pure Dharma for the sake of ultimate happiness, but only strives to obtain happiness before death and eliminate suffering, then even animals have this effort, and even if one is reborn in a good realm, one is the same as an animal. To practice the Mahayana path, one needs such a basis as mentioned earlier. As it is said in the "Encouragement to Develop Higher Aspiration": "Having relied on the path of the Sugatas, in order to liberate beings, one has aroused great mental strength, which is what a human can obtain, not gods, nagas, or asuras, gandharvas, vidyadharas, etc., non-humans also do not have it." In addition, some desire realm gods who have thick imprints of having practiced the path in a human body in the past can initially serve as a basis for seeing the truth, but it is impossible for a body in a higher realm to initially attain the noble path. Moreover, most desire realm gods are also said to be in unfavorable places as mentioned earlier, so the human body is the most excellent basis for initially practicing the path. Moreover, those with unpleasant voices cannot serve as a basis for taking vows, so the bodies of the three continents are praised, and among them, the people of Jambudvipa (Earthlings) are praised. Therefore, having obtained such an excellent basis, why should I make it meaningless? If I make it meaningless, then I am deceiving myself, and what could be greater foolishness than this? Having gone through the dangers of many unfavorable places such as the lower realms, and finally obtaining a chance for liberation, if I make it meaningless and return to those places, then like being deluded by a mantra, wouldn't I become mindless? One should meditate repeatedly through such thoughts. As it is said in "A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Having obtained such leisure, if I do not cultivate virtue, then there is nothing more foolish than this, and there is nothing more deluded than this."

Extremely difficult to find, a place of benefit. Once obtained in such a way, when one possesses wisdom, if one is led back to hell, it is like being deluded by a mantra. I have no heart here. Why am I deluded, I do not know. What is in my heart? Thus he said. Thus, in terms of the ultimate, it is not only of great significance, but also in terms of the temporary, it is easy to accomplish the cause of the body of higher realms, enjoyment, and the perfection of retinue, such as generosity, ethics, patience, etc. One should also think about this basis. If this significant basis does not strive day and night for the cause of these two, it seems like returning empty-handed from a treasure island. Thirdly, in the scriptures, it is said that dying and transmigrating from the lower realms and the higher realms to the lower realms is like the great earth, and being born from there to the higher realms is like the dust taken by the tip of a fingernail. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain from both the higher realms and the lower realms. If you wonder why it is so difficult to obtain, the Four Hundred Verses say: Most people hold on to non-holy dharmas, therefore, most ordinary people will definitely go to the lower realms. As it is said, most people and other beings also hold on to the ten non-virtuous dharmas, etc., and therefore mostly fall into the lower realms. Furthermore, like being angry with a Bodhisattva, even for a moment, one must stay in hell for countless eons. What need is there to say that those who have accumulated sins in many lifetimes, whose karmic results have not been exhausted, and have not been destroyed by the antidote, must stay in the lower realms for countless eons? Even so, if one purifies the causes of the lower realms accumulated in the past and closes the door to newly entering the lower realms, it is not difficult to obtain the higher realms. But such practitioners are extremely rare. If one does not act in this way, one will go to the lower realms. Once one goes to the lower realms, one does not do good but constantly does evil. As the Bodhicaryāvatāra says, one will not even hear the name of the higher realms for countless eons. Poto said: In Phan Yul, there was a place called Ma's Phag Khar, which was taken by the enemy and was in danger for a long time. An old man there was suffering because of this. Once, he heard that the castle had been taken back. Although he could not walk, he still held a spear and dragged himself forward.
