How to conduct the main practice, the conclusion, and the sessions in between: Apply all the object aspects from here up to vipassanā. Second, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Here, first, based on hearing, proper attention arises; from proper attention, correct knowledge of the object arises." This means that the meaning of what is heard is properly attended to with wisdom arising from thought, and from that, meditative wisdom that directly realizes the true meaning arises. As stated in the Ornament of Clear Realization: "The parts of ascertainment and the path of seeing, and the path of meditation itself, repeatedly thinking and measuring, and determining are the path of meditation." This means that the Mahayana noble's path of meditation involves repeatedly thinking, measuring, and determining. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "Therefore, the body, resources, and merit should be continuously given, protected, purified, and increased as appropriate, and should be cultivated." This means that for each of the three—body, resources, and roots of virtue—all four of giving, protecting, purifying, and increasing should be cultivated. Regarding the mentioned cultivation, there are two types: analytical meditation, which cultivates by examining with discriminating wisdom, and placement meditation, which single-pointedly abides without examining. So, what kind of path is analytical meditation, and what kind is placement meditation? Like cultivating faith in a spiritual friend, the preciousness and difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, impermanence of death, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, and bodhicitta, analytical meditation is necessary. Like this, for these, one needs a strong and long-lasting mental force that can convince the mind. Without that, one cannot prevent the opposite, such as disrespect, and generating such a mental force depends entirely on repeatedly examining and cultivating with individual observation. For example, if one fabricates and cultivates attractive characteristics on an object of attachment, strong desire arises, and if one repeatedly thinks about unpleasant characteristics of an enemy, strong hatred arises. Therefore, when cultivating these paths, whether the appearance of the object is clear or not is not important; what is important is that the mind's grasping is strong and long-lasting, so one should engage in analytical meditation.
