The mind cannot remain in a single focus. In the context of cultivating tranquility and insight, etc., in order to make the mind workable by being able to place it on a single focus as desired, if one examines repeatedly, the mind will not be able to generate abiding. For that, one must practice placement meditation. If one does not understand this method and thinks that if one is a scholar, one should only practice analytical meditation, and if one is a simpleton, one should only practice placement meditation, that is also not correct. Because each person needs to practice both. Even scholars need to cultivate tranquility and insight, etc., and even simpletons need to cultivate strong faith in the spiritual friend, etc. Therefore, it is not appropriate to think that repeatedly examining with discriminating wisdom is for the time of listening and contemplating, but not for the time of practice. To think that all thoughts are grasping at characteristics and therefore obstruct enlightenment is the fault of not distinguishing between improper attention, thoughts of grasping at truth, and proper attention, correct thoughts. In this instruction, one must cultivate the non-conceptual samadhi that allows the mind to be placed on a single focus as desired. Do not think that if one has practiced too much analytical meditation beforehand, it will become an obstacle to the arising of samadhi. For example, gold and silver, when repeatedly burned in fire and washed in water by a skilled smith, all impurities are removed, becoming very soft and workable. Then, one can freely transform them into any desired ornaments such as earrings. Similarly, first, regarding afflictions and near afflictions, and misdeeds, as described in the context of contemplating the results of black actions and the faults of samsara, etc., repeatedly contemplating their faults with discriminating wisdom, with an attention that causes the mind to be completely distressed or disgusted, like burning gold in fire, one turns the mind away from the negative aspects and purifies those impurities. And, as described in the context of the qualities of the spiritual friend, the preciousness of leisure and endowment, the qualities of the Three Jewels, the results of white actions, and the benefits of bodhicitta, etc., repeatedly contemplating those qualities with discriminating wisdom, with an attention that causes the mind to be moistened or to generate faith, like washing gold in water.

Thus, having rejoiced and focused the mind on the aspects of white dharma, one moistens the mind with virtuous dharma. In this way, whichever of calm abiding or insight one wishes to cultivate, by focusing on it, one accomplishes it effortlessly. Therefore, such analytical meditation is the supreme method for accomplishing non-conceptual samadhi. As the noble Asanga said: For example, when a blacksmith or a skilled disciple of a blacksmith, in order to purify all the dirt and impurities from gold or silver, constantly burns it with fire and washes it with water, it becomes soft and suitable for making various ornaments, thereby manifesting itself. Similarly, a craftsman who is in accordance with that blacksmith or skilled disciple of a blacksmith, with the tools of a blacksmith, transforms the ornament into any desired shape. Likewise, whenever a yogi becomes weary of the dirt and impurities such as greed, and does not incline towards the suffering of afflictions, and rejoices by focusing on the aspect of virtue, then the mind of that yogi, whether it is joined with the aspect of calm abiding or the aspect of insight, will become very close, very peaceful, unwavering, and unmoving, and will also go towards perfectly accomplishing the meaning as thought. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the main obstacles to the mind remaining stable on a single object are two: excitement and dullness. Among these, if one has a strong and lasting power of wisdom that sees the qualities of the Three Jewels and so on, it is very easy to cut off dullness, because its antidote is to uplift the mind through seeing qualities, as many authoritative persons have said. If one has a strong and lasting power of wisdom that sees the faults of impermanence and suffering and so on, it is very easy to cut off excitement, because excitement is a distraction of the mind that belongs to the category of desire, therefore, scriptures praise renunciation as its antidote. The second has two parts: Encouragement to take the essence on the leisure base, and
