When tranquility diminishes, one should ride the horse of tranquility and cultivate analysis, alternating between resting meditation and analytical meditation. If analytical meditation becomes excessive and the aspect of tranquility decreases, one should increase resting meditation to restore the aspect of tranquility. If resting meditation becomes excessive, one dislikes the essence of analysis, and even analysis becomes impossible, with the mind merely dwelling in a state of tranquility, then one should increase analytical meditation. Cultivating both tranquility and insight in equal measure is powerful, so one should do so. As stated in the final section of the Stages of Meditation: Furthermore, when cultivating insight, if wisdom becomes exceedingly dominant, then because tranquility is weak, like a lamp placed in the wind, the mind wavers, and thus one cannot see that very thing clearly. Therefore, at that time, one should cultivate tranquility. If the aspect of tranquility is too strong, one also cannot see that very thing clearly, like a person overcome by sleep. Therefore, at that time, one should cultivate wisdom. And so forth. When cultivating in this way after analysis, it is unreasonable to seize upon and obstruct all thoughts as grasping at characteristics based on clinging to truth, because clinging to truth is only one aspect of thoughts, as has been extensively proven before. To see that reasoning harms whatever is grasped by thought is an excessive accusation against what is to be refuted by reasoning, and it has been proven that it is not the meaning of scripture either. Even if one does not think so about other phenomena, if one thinks that whatever is grasped by the mind regarding the nature of reality is grasping at characteristics based on clinging to truth, then that is a fault of the way of grasping, not of everything that is grasped. For it is said that in order to seek liberation from cyclic existence, one must thoroughly investigate suchness through various means of scripture and reasoning. Here, meditating on suchness is for the sake of generating non-conceptualization. If one thinks that it does not arise from individual conceptualizations, because cause and effect must be concordant, then the Bhagavan himself has clearly answered this. In the chapter on Light-Protector it says: Light-Protector, just as two pieces of wood rubbed together by the wind produce fire, and having arisen, it burns the two pieces of wood, so too, Light-Protector, if there is correct individual conceptualization, the power of the wisdom of the noble ones arises, and when it arises, it burns that very correct individual conceptualization.

It is said that transcendent wisdom arises from individual discernment. Also, in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation, it is said: "Therefore, when the yogi examines in this way with wisdom, at the time when he does not apprehend the essence of any object as ultimately true, at that time he enters into non-conceptual samadhi. He also realizes that the essence of all dharmas is emptiness. If someone does not meditate by individually examining the essence of objects with wisdom, but only meditates on completely abandoning mental activity, then his conceptualization will never cease, and he will never realize the emptiness of essence, because there is no light of wisdom. In this way, if the fire of knowing reality as it is arises from correct individual discernment, like fire produced by friction, it will burn the wood of conceptualization." Thus spoke the Blessed One. Thus it is. If it were not so, then it would be impossible for the uncontaminated to arise from the contaminated, for the transcendent to arise from the mundane, for the Buddha to arise from sentient beings, and for the noble to arise from ordinary beings, because the two, cause and effect, are different. In the Bodhicitta Commentary it says: Where conceptual thought appears, how can emptiness be there? The mind of the observer and the observed, the Tathagatas have not seen. Where there is an observer and an observed, there is no enlightenment. What is said is that enlightenment cannot be attained by clinging to the observer and the observed as true. It does not prevent the wisdom of individual discernment, and if it prevents the observer and the observed, it contradicts the fact that the treatise establishes Suchness through many doors of individual discernment, and if the Buddhas do not see the two, they will cease to exist. Again, in the same text it says: Unborn and emptiness, and selflessness is called emptiness, whoever meditates on inferiority of self, does not meditate on that. What is said is that it does not prevent meditating on emptiness and selflessness that are aimed at the unborn nature, but it prevents the inferiority of self, which is the emptiness of reproach, which is clinging to them as true. In the Praise of the Transcendent it says: To dispel all imputation, if you show the nectar of emptiness, who?
